GRAHAM – Luke Gray tossed a complete-game one-hit shutout, and the Brownwood Lions scored the runs they needed in the top of the seventh inning of a 2-0 victory over the Graham Steers Thursday night to complete their second three-game sweep of a District 6-4A opponent.
Scoreless through six innings, the 6-4A front-running Lions (18-6-1, 7-1) made all their noise in their final at-bat against Graham (9-12, 2-6).
Campbell Gilmore led off the seventh with a single up the middle, and Justin Valdez came in as a pinch-runner. Jordyn Nickerson then laid down a bunt, and the throw to first base plunked Nickerson in the helmet as all base runners were safe. With runners on the corners and no outs, pinch-hitter Austin Wright laid down a suicide squeeze as Valdez beat the throw home for a 1-0 Lions lead. Antonio Ybarra followed with a grounder to shortstop that was misplayed, allowing Nickerson to race home with the second and final run.
The Lions mustered just three hits on the night – singles from Gilmore, Case Markham and Taylor Bessent.
On the mound, Luke Gray tossed a complete game with seven strikeouts, one walk and just one hit allowed – that coming to lead off the fifth inning. Gray stranded three base runners as the Lions committed two errors behind him.
Brownwood is back in action at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Stephenville, attempting to avenge its only district loss of the season.
