ABILENE – By a comfortable 45-stroke margin, the Brownwood Lions repeated as district golf champions, capturing the 6-4A title Tuesday at Diamondback Golf Course with a 36-hole team score of 633. Runner-up Stephenville posted a 678 composite score.
Also earning a second consecutive district championship was Hudson Reagan, who fired rounds of 70 and 72 for a 142 total – 13 shots clear of runner-up Zakery Moser of Stephenville (76-78=154).
Again joining the Lions at Shadow Hills Golf Course in Lubbock for the Region I-4A tournament will be the Brownwood Lady Lions, who for the second year in a row placed second as a team to advance. The Lady Lions posted a 744 team score, 11 shots behind district champion Glen Rose (733).
The rest of the district champion Lions squad was comprised of Caleb Modawell, who came in third with a 161 off rounds of 73 and 88; Sir Bubba Jones, who tied for fourth with a 165 after an opening 81 and closing 84; sixth-place Slayde Espinoza, who carded a 166 with rounds of 80 and 86; and Cobe Walker, who turned in a 174 with rounds of 87 both days.
Joining the Brownwood contingent at regionals will be Luke Gray, a member of the No. 2 Lions team who qualified as an individual. Gray is the second-place medalist with a 170 composite score thanks to a Monday 86 and Tuesday 84.
The Lady Lions’ squad was sparked by Haylie Martindale, who finished tied for second overall with a 178 after back-to-back rounds of 89. Tristyn Garcia came in fifth with a 184 score with rounds of 93 and 91, while River Jones placed sixth with a 187 after an opening 85 and closing 82. London England added a 195, carding a 96 and 99, and Riley Morton posted a 230 with rounds of 122 and 108.
The rest of the No. 2 Lions team featured Peyton Sharp (92-87=179), Will Stewardson (93-88=181), Grant Gray (89-104=193), and Andrew Boren (101-111=212).
The Region I-4A girls golf tournament will take place April 17-18 and the Region I-4A boys tournament will followed April 19-20.
