MINERAL WELLS – Following a 2-2 tie at the end of intermission and double overtime, the Brownwood Lady Lions won a penalty kick tiebreaker to capture a 14th consecutive bi-district championship over the No. 12 Godley Ladycats Thursday night.
Every season since 2009 – barring 2020, which was not completed due to COVID – the Lady Lions have reached at least the second of the playoffs, and will next face either District 7 champion Benbrook or District 8 fourth seed Fort Worth Castleberry – who square off Friday night – in area round action at a time, date and place to be determined.
Through five penalty kicks, Brownwood (16-5-1) and Godley (14-2-1) had each converted two with Ataleigh Constancio and Kennedi Johnson putting the Lady Lions on the board, while Noemi Ceniceros recorded three saves to keep the score even. Needing to advance to a sixth kick, Sidney Adkins stepped up and delivered the game-winner for the Lady Lions.
“What an insane night for these ladies,” said Lady Lions third-year head coach Alexis Mosqueda. “They never stopped fighting until the very end and ultimately they were rewarded for that. I couldn’t be more proud of the way they competed today. It was a great night to be a Lady Lion.”
The Lady Lions scored their goals in regulation on a first-half kick by Johnson – the 101st of her career- assisted by Constancio, while Jacklyn Lewis found the net in the second half with an assist from Johnson.
