A 36th Division Memorial, currently located at the Brownwood Coliseum, will have a new home in a few months.
During the Brownwood City Council meeting Tuesday, March 14, the Council heard from Harold Stieber, President of the Central Texas Veterans Memorial.
“The reason I’m here today is the 36th Division Memorial, at the Coliseum, has fallen into disrepair,” Stieber said.
Plans are being made to move the 26,000 pound memorial from the Coliseum to Camp Bowie Memorial Park in south Brownwood.
“I checked with the 111th Engineer Battalion. They have agreed to move that for us to a permanent location at the 36th Division Memorial Park in Brownwood. We plan to refurbish it and bring it up to like new status,” Stieber said.
“It does need to be moved. It’s out there by the flagpole by the Coliseum and it does not get the attention and notoriety that it deserves in that location and it needs to be moved with the others. Personally, I’m in favor of it,” said Brownwood Mayor Stephen Haynes.
Other members of the City Council voiced support for the project. An official agenda item to authorize moving the monument will appear on the next City Council agenda.
The target date for moving the monument is June 1st.
