ABILENE – The Brownwood Lady Lions won two of their final three contests at the Abilene Icebreaker softball tournament Saturday, scoring eight runs in all three contests.
Brownwood opened with an 8-4 victory over Sweetwater, suffered a 15-8 loss to Breckenridge, and bounced back with an 8-5 triumph over Snyder.
In the win over Sweetwater, the Lady Lions jumped out to a 6-0 lead with three runs in each of the first two innings.
Brownwood finished with 10 hits, including home runs by Mia Lopez – who drove in three runs – and Cecilia Rodriguez – who finished with four RBIs. Chloe Walls recorded a team-best three hits with an RBI, Rodriguez collected two, and Lopez, Jeniffer Romero – who tripled – Kyleigh Caperton – who doubled – Tynlea Wilson and Peyton Pena added one hit apiece.
In the circle, Wilson worked five innings and allowed four runs – two earned – on four hits with three strikeouts and no walks. The Brownwood defense committed two errors.
Against Snyder, the Lady Lions broke a 5-all deadlock with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Brownwood trailed 2-0 after half an inning but pulled even in the bottom of the first, and did the same thing in the second after falling behind 5-2.
Brownwood again notched 10 hits with Caperton ripping an inside-the-park home run that knocked in three. Caperton, Romero, Pena and Mackenzie Welch led the way with two hits apiece while Rodriguez and Jakayla Peek added one each. Caperton’s three RBIs were a team-best while Peek drove in a pair and Welch, Rodriguez and Pena were credited with one RBI each.
Wilson surrendered five runs – all unearned – on six hits with two strikeouts and a pair of walks in four innings, as the Brownwood defense committed four errors behind her.
In the loss to Breckenridge, the Lady Lions led 5-2 going to the fourth inning were they fell behind 7-5. After pulling even at 7 in the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Lions fell victim to an eight-run frame from Breckenridge in the top of the fifth inning.
For the third game, the Lady Lions amassed 10 hits as Adriana Romero homered and drove in two. Finishing with two hits each were Lopez, Walls, Rodriguez, and Jeniffer Romero, while Wilson also contributed a hit. Walls and Adriana Romero led the way with two RBIs each while Caperton and Wilson contributed one each.
In the circle, Wilson gave up 11 runs – nine earned – on 13 hits, including two home runs, with three walks and no strikeouts. The Brownwood defense committed two errors.
The Lady Lions (5-3) return to action at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday as they host San Angelo Central.
