Brownwood High School (BHS) Art students participated in the Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) Regional UIL competition in San Angelo, TX, on Saturday, February 18. Each student was interviewed and judged on the artwork they created. They were scored on a scale of 1 through 4, with 4 as the highest rating.
“Several students entered more than one art piece,” stated BHS Art teacher Kimber Van Huss. “The students brought home nine gold medals with eight advancing to area and one advancing to state.”
Students that received medals with a score of 4 include Lynnlee Crosby, Edin Kluka, Skye Lange, Taylor Leonard, Kendra Martinez, Caitlyn Schwing, Audrey Swartz, and Addison Welch.
Students that received a score of 3 on submissions are as follows: Emma Carroll, Braelyn Espinoza, Sabre Holdar (2 pieces), Paisley Johnson (2 pieces), Edin Kluka, Ciara McDonough, Caitlyn Schwing, Kaytlyn Smith, Mia Vargas, and Addison Welch.
BHS senior Kendra Martinez advanced to state with her sculpture, “Ramazing Soup.”
“Kendra used paper mache pulp, air-dry clay, foil, wire, cardboard, putty, resin, and acrylic paint to create this realistic bowl of noodles, eggs, radishes, tofu, mushrooms, and chopsticks,” noted Van Huss. “Kendra worked for over a month to create this outstanding artwork.”
Martinez will attend the state competition in San Marcos, TX, at the end of April.
