Most people think as a sportscaster, I’m supposed to know everything about sports and man, when it comes to the Super Bowl I ought to know almost everything, but I don’t. Let me admit to you today that I know very little about the Super Bowls and I don’t know why, it has just never stuck with me.
I can remember the first two, which were not called Super Bowls, but Green Bay played in both of them against Oakland and Kansas City. I think number three, which was the first one to be called a Super Bowl, was actually won by the Jets, maybe over the Colts.
The Cowboys won three – in the ‘90s, they won one, then they won another, they missed a year, came back, and won the third one. They haven’t won one since. Fact is, they haven’t been in one since.
Dallas, I think, has hosted one Super Bowl. That was about ten, fifteen years ago, something like that. Terrible, horrible weather that day, but the game was played and Green Bay won it and that was in Dallas.
Now, go back before the Super Bowl and I’m a lot better. The Cowboys played the Packers 2 years prior to what became the Super Bowl and lost in the last seconds in the Cotton Bowl. The next year the same two played in Green Bay and the Cowboys found another way to lose.
So, we come to the present time. Who won last year? I’m going to be honest with you, I can’t even remember who played last year. This year I know because it’s upon us and I know Philadelphia and Kansas City are playing. So, it’s Kansas City and Philadelphia in 2023, and who wins? I don’t know. I have no clue.
I care about who wins the Super Bowl. I especially care about the players and the coaches but as far as the game goes, I don’t have much of a clue. I think sometime that Kansas City is due to win. I look at them and I look at a Christian quarterback and I look at several Christians on the team. I say, ”Man that would be great”! Then, I look at Philadelphia – Christian quarterback, and they’ve got Christians all over the field. So, who do I pull for? I just hope I get to enjoy some of the game – some of the game. But I think we are in good shape as far as Christians no matter who happens to win.
I’ve been sitting here after five minutes or so and I still can’t tell you who won last year, or can’t even tell you who played last year, but there is something about a Super Bowl that obviously doesn’t mean that much to me.
I guess, if you want to talk about Brownwood State Championships – ‘60, ‘65, ‘67, ‘69, ‘70, ‘78, ’81 – those are the State Championship years. Those are embedded in my mind. But the Super Bowl, I don’t have a clue.
Here’s one guarantee that I can put in your book. I care about Brownwood winning its eighth State Championship a whole lot more than this Super Bowl and whoever wins it – this one, the next one, or any one of them.
Until next time, so long everybody.
