Rachel Gail “Sunny” Lopez-Dodge went to her heavenly home January 18, 2023.  She was 58 years young. Rachel was born in Muleshoe, Texas on August 1, 1964.  Her parents were Pedro “Pete” De la Rosa Lopez and Frances Martinez Lopez, who have both preceded her in death along with her brother Daniel Lopez.  Left to celebrate her life are sister Teri (Ronnie) Bollinger of Brownwood; daughters Reina (Kenny) Capano/Bonner and Quinn (Brent) Berensten; grandsons Sekai Capano and Hakim Bonner.

Rachel’s family moved to Lubbock in 1965.  During her time as a student, she enjoyed playing the cello and taking woodshop classes. She graduated from Dunbar High School with the class of 1982.  She followed in her father’s footsteps by working as a DJ at the school radio station and eventually went on to spend several years running a karaoke company. In addition to the work she did, she was quite the performer. Her go-to songs were “Black Velvet” and “Smooth Operator”. Rachel also worked for the American Red Cross as a CPR and First Aid instructor as well as serving the community by working local events, setting up shelters, and responding to disasters.  She had a heart full of compassion and empathy and made a lasting impression as well as some lifelong friends during her time there.  Her friends and family will remember her as a master crafter and karaoke goddess.  This went right along with her love for any reason to entertain, celebrate, and party.  She could make finger foods, party platters, sweets, and treats that would rival the Martha Stewarts and top Pinterest homemakers of today.  Her vices also included crime shows, shopping, and hanging out with her family.  Rachel was a Christian who was also closely connected to her Native American history and spent time with her friends and family keeping these special and sacred traditions alive.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at The Worship Center, 506 Edwards in Brownwood. Food and refreshments will be available after the service.

Heartland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Condolences, memories, and tributes can be offered to the family online at heartlandfuneralhome.com.
