Dr. John D. Wayne Gunter was born in Brownwood September 20, 1943, to Truman and Ola Mae Gunter.
He attended Brownwood Public School and along the way developed a lifelong love of all things
Motorcycle and there were also many adventures involving his brothers. In 1965 upon her graduation from Bangs High School, he married the love of life Eva Gunter and together they immediately migrated to California where he worked as a submarine painter at Mare Island Shipyard and obtained his bachelor’s degree from Sonoma State College (now known as the Univ. of California at Sonoma.) He then transferred to Norman, Oklahoma where he did his graduate studies – becoming a graduate student instructor teaching geography lab – had many conferences with Coach Barry Switzer regarding the grades of the OU football players. This is also where he became a lifelong OU Sooner died in the wool fan. In 1970 their son, Jason, was born – thus becoming an Okie for life.
John Wayne received his doctorate degree in 1974 and the family relocated to Cedar Falls, Iowa where he Accepted a professorship at the University of Northern Iowa. Eventually, the family returned to Texas and Embarked in a series of adventures – owning and operating a restaurant in Victoria, and Abilene, administering college entrance exams in the area high schools and eventually establishing his business, Old Oak Revival Which has expanded and evolved over the years. He was a determined perfectionist in everything he did and was very proud and protective of his family which now includes grandson, Logan. He was a loyal friend and deeply rooted in his Shiloh church where everyone was part of his family. He will be forever missed but he left many wonderful memories and many friends.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, brother Gail Scifres and sister Marge Anderson, sister Pat Westfall, brother-in-law and sister in-law David and Martha Cole, brother-in-law Lloyd Cole and brother-in-Law Wayne Fisher.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Eva, son Jason and grandson Logan, Brother Don and wife Charlene, brother Travis and wife Faye and her precious sister, Sissy Flippin, Sister-in-law Joyce Fisher and family and Kathy Cole and family and many extended family and friends Who are also family.
Visitation will be held at the Shiloh Church in Richland Springs Texas on December 26, 2022, from 2:00pm – 3:00pm
Services will follow at 3:00pm
Interment will be at The Indian Creek Cemetery in Brownwood
Arrangements are under the direction of Heritage Davis Morris in Brownwood.
