The Brownwood Police Department issued the following press release Thursday morning:
On Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at approximately 12:45 a.m., Brown County Communications received a 911 call from a man claiming to have been shot. The male victim stated that he was running from Main Blvd. toward Belle Plain and needed help. First responders were dispatched and proceeded to the area.
Officer Justin Taylor with the Brownwood Police Department was first to arrive and located the male victim in the 2100 block of Belle Plain. The male had a gunshot wound to his right leg and stated that he was jumped by two unknown males in the area of Main Blvd. The males assaulted him and attempted to rob him until he was able to break free and run into and open field.
At one point, the victim heard gunshots and observed the splatter of bullets on the ground around him until he felt his right leg ‘go heavy’ with pain radiating from it. The male was transported to Hendricks Hospital-Brownwood with non-life-threatening injuries.
Brownwood Police Department Criminal Investigations Division was contacted and began an investigation. During the investigation, it was learned that the male victim agreed to sell marijuana to a female acquaintance, 19-year-old Alyssa Blackburn of Brownwood. When she arrived at the prearranged location, the 2 males approached from an unknown direction and began the assault; attempting to rob the victim.
Detectives followed more leads, located Blackburn and further learned of the plan she made with 20-year-old Jamal Deon Baker of Brownwood, to rob the victim of his narcotics. More interviews were conducted with the involved individuals and forensic evidence was located and secured. Based on all the information gathered, warrants were issued for Blackburn and Baker for Aggravated Assault w/a Deadly Weapon.
On Wednesday, December 7, 2022, both subjects were arrested at their residence and transported to the Brown County Jail without incident.
