Jan Case Mattox passed away in May, Texas on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at the age of 68. A memorial service for Jan will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 10 in the Heartland Funeral Home Chapel.
Jan was born February 27, 1954, in Pampa, Texas to John and Madge Zuerker. After graduating from Pampa High School, she attained her degree from Texas Tech University and soon after opened a successful retail clothing store in Lubbock. In 1981 she married Jess Mattox. They had two sons, Jesse and Brandon, who they raised in Colleyville, TX, and then in Amarillo. After Amarillo they lived in Sugarland, Texas for many years before embarking on their new adventure in May, Texas.
While in Colleyville, Jan was active in Junior League where one of her favorite services was to organize horseback rides for handicapped children, which gave her the opportunity to share her passion for animals with others. She loved animals and had many pets in her life, but big, lazy dogs seemed to hold a special place in her heart.
Jan loved her friends (there was never a dull moment when she joined the party), country music (she often argued with Alexa about song selections), and diet Dr. Pepper (she couldn’t start her day without one). She also loved a well decorated room. She had a great eye for style and undertook many home improvement projects over the years, often doing much of the work herself. Jess and Jan’s latest project was a complete remodel of their new country home.
But most of all Jan loved her family. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, who put lots of energy and love into making a good home for her family. Jan was generous, creative, affectionate, and fun. From pajama parties and cookie baking to painting projects and bear hunts, she created many fond memories for her kids and grandkids.
Jan is survived by her husband Jesse Kuykendall Mattox III; her sons Jesse Mattox IV (wife Christy), and Brandon Mattox (wife Aimy); her grandchildren Natalie Shepherd, Adelin Mattox, and Alton Mattox; and her brothers Jack Zuerker (wife Tommie) and Joe Zuerker (wife Lisa) and her sister Jill Henry (husband Bill).
