Mary Alice “Granny” Bastardo, went home to Heaven on Friday, December 2, 2022. Mary passed away peacefully in San Angelo, TX at Shannon Medical Center surrounded by her family. Mary Alice Contreras was born to Margarita Perez Contreras and Gilbert Contreras on September 15, 1951 in Brownwood, TX. She grew up in Brownwood where she met the love of her life, Pete G. Bastardo Sr. whom she married in Bangs, TX and would go on to have four children, daughter Carrie, sons Pete, Gilbert and Jayson. They were married for 53 years and resided in Brownwood and Early, TX. Mary was a homemaker the majority of her life, however once her children were older, she obtained her Cosmetology License from Ranger College and was a hairdresser for many years working for several local salons, eventually owning her own Hairstyling Salon and Beauty Supply Business. Mary and Pete had the opportunity to become foster parents and cared for several foster children in the community over the last several years. More recently, due to health issues, she was retired and enjoyed spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren and her favorite pet Coco. Mary enjoyed seeing pictures and face timing with her two great-grandchildren Mary loved watching western movies, listening to the music of Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton and Patsy Cline.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Margarita and Legario “Guy” Diaz of Brownwood, and Gilbert Contreras of Hebbronville, TX, brother, Isabell “Chavez” Contreras of Fort Worth, TX and half-siblings, Pearl Diaz and Lorenzo Diaz.
Mary is survived by her husband Pete G. Bastardo Sr. of Early, Carrie and husband Eric Tipton of Bangs, TX, Pete Jr. and wife Terri Bastardo of Early, TX, Gilbert Bastardo and wife Liz Regan of Portland, TX and Jayson Bastardo and wife Veronica Chairez of Brownwood, TX. Mary is survived by several grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, granddaughters, Kim Bastardo of Portland, TX, Brittany and husband Joseph Bradcovich of Woodbridge, Virginia, Stacey Bastardo of Brownwood, Ryan Bastardo of Brownwood TX, Mikaela and husband Michael Holder of Killeen, TX, Mackenzie and husband Jack Haley of Abilene, TX, Lindsey Bastardo of Early, TX and Destino Tobias of Brownwood, TX, Lilah Bastardo, Easton Bastardo and Gavin Bastardo all of Portland, TX. Mary more recently was so proud to become a great grandmother this year to Josiah Asher Bradcovich and Asher Alan Holder.
Mary is also survived by several brothers and a sister, Phillip Contreras of Brownwood, TX, Cruz Contreras of Brownwood, TX, Willie Diaz of Bangs, TX, Ray Diaz of Brownwood, TX, Danny Diaz of Brownwood, TX, sister Ora Martinez of Fort Worth, TX. Mary is also survived by half-siblings, Guy Diaz Jr. of Bangs, TX, Gilbert Contreras Jr., Connie Garcia and Janie Contreras.
Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, December 7th at the Davis Morris/Heritage Funeral Home in Brownwood, TX at 10 AM. Mary Alice Bastardo will be laid to rest at Greenleaf Cemetery. Immediately afterwards, a reception will be held at the Adams Street Community Center where family and friends can enjoy a meal and fellowship. Family and Friends are invited to Davis Morris/Heritage Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 6th from 6 to 8 pm for visitation and celebration of Mary’s life.
