The District 2-4A Division I champion Brownwood Lions were as dominant in the all-district football selections as they were on the gridiron, earning 26 selections en route to their first district championship since 2010.
The Lions claimed five of the league’s six superlative honors as senior linebacker/quarterback Chance Jones was named the District MVP; junior quarterback Ike Hall was tabbed Offensive MVP; junior Quinten McCarty was named Defensive MVP; and senior Isaac Gray was selected Lineman of the Year.
Also, Brownwood fifth-year head coach Sammy Burnett, who owns a 33-24 record at his alma mater, was named the league’s Coach of the Year.
Jones recorded 123 tackles, 5 sacks, 1 for loss, 1 interception, and 1 punt block from his linebacker position and completed 10 of 16 passes for 213 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions and 17 yards rushing on three carries in his lone start at quarterback against Big Spring.
Hall, at quarterback, connected on 111 of 208 passes for 1,837 yards with 17 scoring toss and six picks, while rushing for 948 yards and a dozen touchdowns on 125 carries.
McCarty, at defensive tackle, logged 128 tackles, 17 for loss, 2 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries, and 1 punt block on a defense that allowed 17 points and 269 yards – 153 rushing and 116 passing – per game, with 21 takeaways on the season.
Gray, at left tackle, helped anchor an offensive front that paved the way for 40 points and 386 yards – 229 on the ground and 157 through the air – per outing, including two games of at least 60 points.
First-team offensive selections included senior running back Konlyn Anderson, senior fullback Taylor Bessent, senior receivers Thad Hinds and Jason Jackson, and senior right tackle Slayde Espinoza.
Anderson led the Lions with 1,539 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns on 257 carries; Hinds grabbed 44 catches for 846 yards and eight scores; Jackson hauled in 20 receptions for 419 yards and nine touchdowns; and Bessent tallied 10 catches for 117 yards with a trip to the end zone.
Chosen for the first-team defense were junior linebacker Sam Kallman, junior cornerback Morsello Hooker, senior secondary member Brayden Daub, junior defensive tackle Davis Le, and junior punter Junior Martinez.
Kallman netted 134 tackles, 5 sacks, 3 for loss, 1 interception, and 1 fumble recovery; Le tallied 47 tackles; Hooker recorded 31 tackles, 1 for loss, 6 interceptions, 10 PBUs; Daub notched 48 tackles and 1 fumble recovery; and Martinez booted 27 punts for a 40.4-yard average with a long of 58.
Selected as a utility/special teams player was senior Case Markham, who returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown against El Paso Irvin, blocked an extra point against Wichita Falls that was returned for two points; recorded 60 tackles, 2 for loss, 2 interceptions, and 1 pass break-up on defense; and rushed for 30 yards on 5 carries on offense.
Landing on the second-team offense were senior receiver Jordan Leach, senior center Chris Robinson, senior guard Roan Aguinaga, and Martinez at kicker.
Leach pulled down 26 catches for 427 yards and two touchdowns, while Martinez converted 11 of 16 field goals with a long of 45, and 66 of 67 extra-points to finish with 99 points scored.
Picked for the second-team defense were junior secondary member Jake Jetton, junior linebacker Stevie Ramirez, and junior lineman Logan Knight.
Jetton collected 108 tackles, 3 for loss, and 2 fumble recoveries; Ramirez recorded 81 tackles, 4 sacks, 3 for loss, and 1 fumble recovery; and Knight registered 24 tackles, 1 for loss, and 1 sack.
Receiving honorable mention for Brownwood were junior cornerback Jordyn Nickerson, junior linebacker Jaylan Brown, and senior guard Damian Sanchez.
Brown finished with 48 tackles, 1 for loss and 3 sacks, while Nickerson logged 47 tackles with 3 for loss and 1 interception.
The Lions posted a perfect 4-0 mark in district, outscoring their foes 200-44 – and average of 50-11 per game – and finished 10-3 on the season with bi-district and area championships to go along with their district title.
