COMANCHE – After winning just one game in head coach Jake Escobar’s first season, the Comanche Indians are District 5-3A Division II champions in year two, notching their ninth victory in 10 tries, 49-7 over Eastland, in Friday’s regular-season finale.
Comanche (9-1, 5-0) jumped out to a 15-0 lead over Eastland (1-9, 1-4) after one quarter, which grew to 29-0 by halftime and 35-0 heading into the fourth period.
The Indians generated 385 total yards – 285 on the ground and 100 through the air.
Sawyer Wilkerson eclipsed the 2,000-yard barrier with 194 rushing yards and two touchdowns Friday night while quarterback Layden Welch tacked on 80 yards and a touchdown and passed for 100 yards and another score. Leading receivers were Miguel Martinez with four catches for 51 yards and Kyler Beaty with two grabs for 32 yards and score.
Defensive standouts were Martinez with a 56-yard interception return for a touchdown and four tackles; Dom Rios with three sacks and eight tackles; Israel Medrano with a team-high 11 tackles; and Diego Gutierrez with 10 takedowns.
Comanche will kick off its playoff run at 7 p.m. Thursday in Weatherford against District 6 fourth-seed Henrietta (6-4).

Rising Star 2, Moran 0 (forfeit)
RISING STAR – The Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Class A Division II No. 9 Rising Star Wildcats secured an outright District 14 championship with Friday’s forfeit by winless Moran (0-10, 0-3).
Rising Star (9-1, 3-0) will open the playoffs against District 14 runner-up Blackwell (5-4) at 7 p.m. Thursday in Trent.

Miles 49, Cross Plains 21
CROSS PLAINS – The Cross Plains Buffaloes were unable to improve their postseason seeding in District 6-2A Division II, as they dropped Friday’s regular-season finale to the Miles Bulldogs, 49-21.
Miles (8-2, 4-1) secured the second seed while Cross Plains (7-3, 2-3) will enter the playoffs as the fourth seed after the Buffaloes surrendered 341 yards – 266 passing and 75 rushing – while amassing 333 yards, with 322 coming on the ground.
Down 14-0 early, Cross Plains pulled even at 14 on touchdown runs of 2 yards by Dusty Wyatt and 3 yards by Kade Purvis. Trailing 28-14, the Buffaloes trimmed the deficit to 28-21 on a 7-yard run by Purvis but got no closer.
Noah Moses finished with 168 yards on the ground for Cross Plains and Riley Conlee added 146 yards. Purvis was 7 of 14 through the air for 11 with one interception. Ryan Reed caught a team-high three passes.
Defensively for the Buffaloes, Conlee logged nine tackles followed by Moses with seven and Kadin Galvan and Tye McWalters with five each. Asher Moses picked off a pass for the lone takeaway.
Cross Plains will begin its postseason run against District 5 champion and fourth-ranked Wink (10-0) at 7 p.m. Thursday in Big Spring.

Tolar 63, San Saba 0
SAN SABA – The San Saba Armadillos were unable to knock the No. 4 Tolar Rattlers from the ranks of the undefeated as they fell, 63-0, in Thursday’s season finale.
Tolar (10-0, 6-0) led San Saba (6-4, 2-4) by a 28-0 count after one quarter, 49-0 at halftime, and 56-0 through through three frames.

Hamilton 22, Goldthwaite 0
GOLDTHWAITE – The Goldthwaite Eagles were unable to pick up a win in their final opportunity of 2022, falling in the season finale, 22-0, to the District 5-2A Division I rival and playoff-bound Hamilton Bulldogs.
Goldthwaite (0-10, 0-6) finished with 233 yards of total offense – 179 rushing and 54 passing – with four turnovers. Hamilton (5-5, 3-3) generated 254 yards, with 209 coming on the ground, and coughed up the ball twice.
Carsyn Campbell rushed for 119 yards for the Eagles while while Cutter Campbell chipped in 45 on the ground and 54 yards through the air. Collin Gardner was the leading receiver with three catches for 32 yards while Luke Sanderson added two grabs for 18 yards. Rylan Wiedebusch also rushed for 15 yards for Goldthwaite.

Rochelle 51, Brookesmith 6
ROCHELLE – Playing for just the second time in four District 16-A Division II outings, the Brookesmith Mustangs concluded their campaign with a 51-6 loss to Rochelle.
After opening district action with a 46-0 win over Lohn, Brookesmith (1-9, 1-3) forfeited the next two contests to Richland Springs and Cherokee due to illnesses and injuries.
Rochelle (7-3, 2-2) again missed out on the playoffs despite a stellar season, falling to district runner-up Richland Springs, 44-40, during the month of October.
