The display is a project of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (Welcome W. Chandler Chapter) as part of its annual “Wreaths Across America” campaign. Wreaths Across America is a nationwide event whose mission is to “Remember, Honor, and Teach by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at more than 3,400 locations in all 50 states, at sea, and abroad.” Dr. Julie Welker, President of the local chapter of the DRT, commented “Our goal is to lay a wreath at every veteran’s grave in Greenleaf Cemetary, and there are about 2,000 veteran’s graves there.”
If you would like to honor a veteran with a wreath, you can purchase one by visiting www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/TX1050P, or by mailing a check to the Welcome W. Chandler DRT chapter, c/o Nancy Lowry, treasurer, P.O. Box 272, Bangs, TX 76823. Wreaths are $15 each. The local DRT chapter will host the wreath laying ceremony at Greenleaf Cemetary on Saturday, December 17, at 10:00 a.m. The community is welcome to attend the program and help lay wreaths following the ceremony.
The veterans posters can be viewed at the Brown County Museum of History, 212 N. Broadway, during the museum’s regular hours: Thursdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. A special program honoring the veterans will be held at the Museum on Veteran’s Day, Friday November 11, at 10:00 a.m.
