During Tuesday morning’s meeting, the Brownwood City Council unanimously authorized City Manager Emily Crawford to sign an agreement with USA Shade for the installation of canopies at the Sports Complex to replace shade structures damaged in a May 24.
A total of 52 of the 66 canopies at the complex were damaged, and the City Council also improved a budget amendment to install remaining canopies that are not part of the insurance replacements at the Sports Complex.
The cost of the 52 replacements canopies is simply the $5,000 insurance deductible, and the 14 new structures are estimated to cost $27,061.74. USA Shade is provided the equipment and installation, which is estimated to begin mid to late February 2023.
The reason for replacing them canopies at once is the keep the uniformity at the complex. The colors of the canopies will remain the same, as it was stated the field at the complex are now identified by the colors of the canopies.
Also Tuesday, the City Council unanimously approved accepting a proposal from Pro Track and Tennis, Inc. for the resurfacing of the tennis courts at Coggin Park, as well as ratifying BMDD’s participation in the project.
Due to the agreement, the project will cost the City $60,600 and the BMDD $60,000 for the $120,600 total.
Pro Track and Tennis will install Nova Sports Color Coating System on all of the courts. To do this, they will remove all current surfacing down to the concrete, patch areas where needed, convert two tennis courts to eight pickleball courts and the other three courts will be re-stripped for tennis. Pro Track and Tennis, Inc has submitted this proposal as a Buy Board contract. I
The resurfacing work will begin in March 2023.
The City Council also unanimously approved authorizing the purchase of a patch truck for the Street Department.
The Street Department budget includes a patch truck for $280,000. The current price has increased to $311,490.28 which is a difference of $31,490.28. This will change future quarterly payments from $15,162 to $16,791, an increase of $1,692 but this year’s budget will not be affected. This truck will be purchased through Rush Truck Center in Dallas through a BuyBoard contract.
Also Tuesday, the City Council gave approval to City Manager Emily Crawford to sign an agreement with Texas Health and Human Services (HHS) Medicaid Administrative Claiming (MAC) contract for October 1, 2022 through September 30, 2027.
The City Council also approved accepting donations to the Fire Department from the Stephen and Mary Birch Foundation, and also a donation from Atmos Energy.
On October 7, a donation in the amount of $20,000 was received from the Stephen and Mary Birch Foundation Inc. The foundation owns a local ranch of which portions of the ranch are protected by the Brownwood Fire Department.
On September 30, a donation in the amount of $2,000 was received from Atmos Energy, the company that provides natural gas distribution to the City of Brownwood. The Brownwood Fire Department regularly works with local Atmos crews providing initial leak detection to residents and support to Atmos crews during large leaks.
Passing on the consent agenda Tuesday were:
- Ratifying a BMDD Board action to approve a Building Improvement Incentive Program (BIIP) grant to Seth Hoover not to exceed $12,938 for a property located at 2400 Crockett Drive.
- Ratifying a BMDD Board action to approve a Building Improvement Incentive Program (BIIP) grant to Precision Dent Repair not to exceed $15,269 for a property located at 1507 Austin Avenue.
- Ratifying a BMDD Board action to approve a Building Improvement Incentive Program (BIIP) grant to Tea2Go not to exceed $23,500 for a property located at 2208 Austin Avenue.
- Ratifying a BMDD Board action to approve a Downtown Retail Opportunity Program (DROP) grant to Glenda Packer not to exceed $25,000 for a property located at 209 Fisk Street.
