Coggin Elementary School held its annual 6th Grade Boys and Girls Basketball Championship games on Monday, October 17, in the Brownwood High School (BHS) gymnasium.

Two championship games were held, each featuring the top two teams. The girls played first, with the “Spice Girls” taking on the “Lady Lions.”

“Spice Girls won the championship game 25-15 and went undefeated this season,” said Coggin P.E. Coach Haylee Ratliff. “In the championship game, Jefferson scored 11 points, Allen 8 points, Abernathy 4 points, and Moses 2 points. Jefferson had the highest points for the season with 47 points and Allen with 22.”

The Spice Girls team wore maroon jerseys and included players Brenda Allen (#45), Kynlee Jefferson (#12), Riley Abernathy (#4), Kensington Moses (#3), Courtnee Williams (#50), Braylee Reeves (#11), Isabella Hernandez (#40), Ryann Waller (#24), and Karya Munoz-Munsell (#23).

Earning second place for the season, the Lady Lions team (in white jerseys) consisted of players Audrey Keas (#15), Adylee Galloway (#24), Maliyah Morgan (#20), Jaylan Doucette (#10), Aryan Brown (#11), Brayleigh Caine (#12), Alayna Hernandez (#23), Emma Belez (#50), and Serenity Bonnell (#22).

“A big thank you to Coach Hohertz and her high school athletes for pouring into the 6th grade girls basketball intramurals program,” stated Ratliff. “I am extremely proud of the growth that the girls had through the season, and I can’t wait to watch them continue playing in the future.”

Hohertz also expressed her appreciation for the program, which allows the high school players to coach and mentor the 6th grade players. “A big thank you to Coach Ratliff for continuing this program,” said Hohertz. “My girls enjoy being able to give back to the future.”

For the boys, the championship game featured two teams, one donning maroon and the other white. The maroon team consisted of players Axton Jimenez, Anias McGlothin, Zaylon Sotelo, Karson Stevens, Kayden Doucette, and Emory Arias. The team in white included players Jackson Clark, Donovyn York, Rylan Martin, Landry Ross, Lucas Conway, Julius Delgado, James Ongteco, and Gabriel Rivas.

White came out on top, winning 27-7 over the maroon team. Players contributing to the 20-point win included Jackson Clark (11 points), Rylan Martin (8 points), Landry Ross (4 points), Lucas Conway (2 points), and Julius Delgado (2 points).

Point earners for maroon were Axton Jimenez (5 points) and Zaylon Sotelo (2 points).

“I would like to thank BHS Athletics for the use of the high school gym for our 6th Grade Boys and Girls Basketball Championship games,” stated Coggin Coach Brandon Brown. “Thank you to Coach Parker and Coach Hohertz for helping us this year and for sending the high school boys basketball players over to help mentor each game. I would also like to thank Coach Dalleh and Howard Payne for sending their guys over to help mentor. Both were a huge positive influence on our 6th grade boys. Thank you to the parents for their support this season. All boys that participated did a great job!”
