Owned by Stephanie and Sara Young and located across the alley from Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, Urban Roots will provide a wide variety of indoor plants, home décor and other accessories.
“We have so many great places in town – Sliger’s, Hardwick’s, even Home Depot – for outdoor plants,” Stephanie Young said. “I love plants. I think plants make people happy. You go to the big cities and walk into the stores and they are just flooded with indoor plants, pots, baskets, and I wanted to bring that here. I’ve been talking about it with Sara and I just said, ‘Let’s just do it. We already own one business in Bangs Physical Therapy and this has kind of been my dream, and I think we can do it.’”
Urban Roots BTX will offer many plants that you can’t find anywhere else in Brownwood.
“There’s going to be so many different varieties of indoor plants,” Young said. “Home Depot carries a decent amount of plants but these will be some of what they carry but a lot of what they don’t, what you can’t find around here. We’ll carry tons of indoor plants, pots, macrame, and eventually we’ll be having terrariums and carrying those.”
The store will do more than just sell items as it will offer plant education as well.
“A lot of people want indoor plants and say they can’t keep them alive,” Young said. “A lot of times you need to be educated about what plant it is, where you can sit it and how often do you water it. I really want to do the education portion of it as well, so we’ll be having some workshops and sharing some videos.”
Young intends to have Urban Roots BTX open by the end of October in preparation for the holiday shopping season.
“Just like any new business starting up, a lot of that depends on things that are on back order,” Young said. “But things are starting to come in, our inventory is coming in, so I think we’ll probably get it done by the end of October.”
Initially, store hours will be Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Those hours could change, Young added.
“I’m definitely going to do the Second Sundays and as far as Tuesdays, I’m still waiting to see how that plays out,” Young said. “I was going to match Shaw’s hours as best as I could because of the traffic we could get from Shaw’s. I’m also looking to see what everybody else downtown has done with their hours and what works best. I understand we’re getting a lot of out-of-town traffic downtown on the weekends, so I want to make sure I’m available for that.”
Regarding how she would describe Urban Roots BTX to a potential customer, Young said, “Come in and just feel the atmosphere. When you come in and see plants and feel a really good atmosphere, it brings you joy and I feel like we really need that right now, everybody needs that. Come in, let me help you pick out something for your home that makes you happy, that brings you joy. I want people to have an experience when they come in, so let me help you bring some joy to your house.”
