JAYTON – The Class A Division I No. 3 May Tigers sent early notice that they again will be a force to be reckoned with in the six-man ranks, rolling by the Class A Division II No. 3 Jayton Jaybirds Friday night in a 58-12 road victory.
May (1-0) finished with 427 yards of total offense – 330 passing and 97 rushing – against Jayton (0-1).
Luke McKenzie completed 5 of 7 passes for 157 yards and three touchdowns, Braden Steele connected on 5 of 8 attempts for 147 yards and a score, and Ben Harrell was 2 of 3 for 26 yards.
Leading receivers included Bryson Guerrero with five catches for 145 yards and a pair of touchdowns, Steele with four grabs for 138 yards and two trips to the end zone, Harrell with two receptions covering 46 yards, and Damian Salinas chipped in a 1-yard catch.
On the ground, Steele led the way with 31 yards and a touchdown, Salinas tacked on 27 yards and scored twice, Wyatt Hardy tallied a 21-yard carry, and McKenzie4finished with 18 yards rushing.
The Tiger defense was led by Steele with 12 tackles, including two for loss, and a pass defended; Salinas with 11 tackles with one for loss, a fumble caused and a fumble recovered; Guerrero with six tackles and two for loss; McKenzie with six tackles and a pass broken up; Kross Kenyon with three tackles, one fumble recovery and one kick blocked; Harrell with three tackles; Hardy and Adam Blankinship with two tackles; and Alexis Mejia with one takedown.
May will host Austin St. Stephens (1-0) – a 66-20 winner over Marble Falls Faith Academy Friday night – in its home opener next week.

Coleman 7, Mason 6
MASON – In a Class 2A Division II Top 15 battle, defense stole the show, and it was a defensive play by the No. 9 Coleman Bluecats that allowed them to leave Mason with a 7-6 win over the No. 13 Punchers.
Mason (0-1) tallied its only touchdown on a 26-yard scoring toss with 63 seconds left in the contest, but the Coleman (1-0) defense turned away the two-point try to notch the victory.
The Bluecats grabbed a 7-0 lead in the first period on a 72-yard touchdown pass from Jadin Jackson to Braxton Smith, which turned out to be just enough points for Coleman.
Coleman finished with 252 total yards – 138 rushing and 114 passing – and four turnovers, while Mason manufactured 218 yards – 127 through the air and 91 on the ground – with three giveaways.
Jackson completed 3 of 5 passes for 101 yards with one interception for Coleman, as Smith caught two passes for 76 yards and Ryland Gentry hauled in a 25-yard reception.
On the ground Gentry led Coleman with 44 rushing yards trailed by Brent Bouldin with 43, Jackson with 35 and Dayden Hunter with 16.
Next week, the Bluecats are back in action as they open the home portion of their schedule against Ballinger (0-1), which fell to Sonora, 29-7, on opening night.

Comanche 49, Brady 7
COMANCHE – The Comanche Indians jumped on the Brady Bulldogs early, to the tune of 36 first-half points, and never looked back in a resounding 49-7 season-opening victory.
The Indians (1-0), who won just once in head coach Jake Escobar’s first season at his alma mater in 2021, generated 441 yards of total offense, including 302 rushing.
Sawyer Wilkerson rushed for a team-high 103 yards for Comanche and scored on carries of 3 and 23 yards. Cayden Davis chipped in 94 yards, including a 57-yard scoring sprint, and Zeke Medrano tacked on 55 yards with a 22-yard touchdown run.
Quarterback Layden Welch connected on 6 of 10 passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns – a 12-yarder to Miguel Martinez and an 11-yarder to Kyler Beaty. Welch also rushed for 46 yards.
Martinez led the way with five receptions for 127 yards, Beaty’s lone catch was for a touchdown and Isaac Morales tacked on a 2-yard reception from Davis.
Carlos Esquivel also booted field goals of 29 and 40 yards for the Indians.
Defensively, Medrano registered 17 tackles for the Indians followed by Ayden Fishback with 10, Pierson Sorrells with nine, and Dom Rios with eight.
Next week, Comanche takes to the road for the first time as it visits Bangs (0-1), which is coming off a 34-20 loss to Early.

San Saba 46, Florence 14
SAN SABA – Looking to improve on last season’s two-win campaign, the San Saba Armadillos throttled the Florence Buffaloes, 46-14, in Friday’s season opener for both teams.
San Saba (1-0) produced 326 yards of total offense with 277 coming on the ground against the Florence (0-1) defense.
Tyler Johnson paced the Armadillos with 77 rushing yards and three touchdowns, while also catching three passes for 37 yards with two more trips to the end zone.
Ethan Gonzales rushed for a team-high 112 yards for San Saba while Lance Taylor chipped in 42 yards, Haiden Van Bibber added 39, and Zuriel Herrera logged a 7-yard carry.
Taylor also completed 4 of 5 passes for 49 yards, while Lane Miller added a 12-yard reception.
Defensively for the Armadillos, Dylan Ware collected 15 tackles, including seven for loss, trailed by Herrera with 12, Winton Lackey with nine and Jesus Betancourt with seven.
Next week, the Armadillos begin a stretch of four straight road games at Junction (0-1), which is coming off a 28-8 opening loss to De Leon.

Cross Plains 40, Winters 14
WINTERS – Following a horrific preseason and the tragic passing of teammate Ryan Hopkins following an automobile accident that also injured Bentley Hall, the Cross Plains Buffaloes took to the gridiron for the first time during the 2022 regular season Friday night and came away with 40-14 victory over the Winters Blizzards.
Cross Plains (1-0) led Winters (0-1) by a 12-6 count after one quarter, 33-14 at halftime, and added a final touchdown in the third quarter.
The Buffaloes finished with 355 yards of total offense – 221 rushing and 134 passing – while giving up 297 yards, with 220 coming through the air.
Standouts for Cross Plains included Noah Moses with 104 yards and a touchdown on the grond, Asher Moses with 36 rushing yards, Riley Conlee with 35 yards rushing, and Dusty Wyatt with 29 yards and three rushing touchdowns.
Through the air, Kade Purvis connected on 10 of 17 passes for 134 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
Ryan Reed led the Buffaloes with two catches for 75 yards, both of which resulted in touchdowns. Asher Moses hauled in four receptions for 47 yards, Noah Moses grabbed two passes for 11 yards and Wyatt finished with two catches for 10 yards.
Defensive standouts were Conlee with 10 tackles and a sack; Noah Moses with eight tackles and three pass break ups; Tye McWalters with five tackles, two sacks and an interception; Michael Samora with four tackles and a sack; and Coltyn Barron and Wyatt also picked off passes.
Next week, Cross Plains opens its home slate of games against De Leon (1-0), which knocked off Junction, 28-8, Friday night.

Rising Star 56, Blanket 18
RISING STAR – The Rising Star Wildcats stunned the Class A Division II No. 18 Blanket Tigers Friday night, 56-18, spoiling head coach Michael Cherry’s debut with the black and gold.
Rising Star (1-0) – led by head coach Derek Stevens, a former May assistant – racked up 305 yards of total offense, with 158 coming on the ground and 147 coming through the air.
Blake Wilson rushed for 45 yards, Tristan Jackson added 39, Dathon Morris chipped in 34 yards and Anthony Pollard contributed 28 yards and all four scored once on the ground for the Wildcats.
Jake Bell was 4 of 5 for 96 yards through the air, Morris connected on 3 of 5 passes for 47 yards, and Jackson connected on 2 of 3 passes for 4 yards, and all three tossed one touchdown.
Top receivers were Morris with three catches for 59 yards and a score, Jackson with two for 37 and a trip to the end zone and Dakota Higgins grabbed two receptions for 17 yards and scored once. Kobey Morris and Wilson tacked on receptions of 24 and 10 yards, respectively.
Defensively for the Wildcats, Pollard led the way with 10 tackles followed by Dathon Morris with eight, Bell with seven and Wilson and Jackson with five each.
Stats for Blanket (0-1) were not available.
Next week, Blanket looks to rebound at Bryson (0-1), which is coming off a 45-0s loss to Azle Christian, while Rising Star welcomes Sidney (1-0), which upended Priddy, 26-13, this past Thursday.

GOLDTHWAITE – The Andy Howard coaching era for the Goldthwaite Eagles opened with a 49-0 setback at the hands of the Class 2A Division I No. 7 Crawford Pirates Friday night.
Goldthwaite (0-1) finished with 272 yards of total offense – 157 on the ground and 115 through the air – while Crawford piled up 392 yards – 341 rushing and 51 passing.
For the Eagles, Carysn Campbell rushed for a team-best 57 yards while Rylan Wiedebusch chipped in 51 on the ground. Bryce Brookings connected on 7 of 15 passes for 92 yards but was picked off twice.
Next week, Goldthwaite heads to Santo (1-0), which is coming off a 49-0 triumph over Electra.
