The Brownwood Police Department issued the following press release Monday afternoon:
On Sunday, July 31, 2022, at approximately 1:20 a.m., officers with the Brownwood Police Department were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 3500 block of Rhodes Road. The caller reported to dispatch, hearing a male and female physically fighting inside an apartment.
When officers arrived on scene, they were able to hear a female’s voice yelling for a male to ‘get off her’ from a second story apartment. It was apparent to the officers that the female was in distress/pain.
Officers went to the apartment door and identified themselves. The female inside the apartment continued to yell for the officers to open the door. The male inside argued with the female and continued to state ‘babe’ in his attempt to not get into trouble before cursing the female and opening the door.
The male was detained and identified as 26-year-old Matthew Power of Brownwood. The female victim was located inside the apartment hallway. It was apparent to officers that she was the victim of family violence as injuries and marks on her face and body were evident. The female was crying and shaking and appeared weak as if about to faint while holding her stomach, cradling her unborn child. Lifeguard EMS was contacted to check the welfare of the victim who was ultimately transported to Hendricks Medical Center-Brownwood for further care.
The heavily intoxicated Mr Power was arrested and charged with Assault Family Violence (Impeding Breathing), Continuous Violence Against the Family, Unlawful Restraint, and Interference with an Emergency Call for Assistance.
