City of Brownwood Sports Coordinator Robert Anders on Thursday shared plans for charity softball games Oct. 29 at Howard Payne University’s Don Shepard Park between the Brownwood Police Department, Brownwood Fire Department and Lifeguard EMS.
“When I got hired back in May it was one of the Top 10 things I wanted to get in the first six months or so of being on the job,” Anders said. “This was an idea I thought of when I was coaching at Howard Payne that I thought would be great for us to put on. When I transitioned over to the city, with the infrastructure we have here and the relationships we have here with the city, in the position I’m in as the sports coordinator I wanted to organize something like this. Within three days of each other I met with EMS, fire and police and they said it was a great event and they wanted to be involved. They’ve all been really supportive and proactive.”
Anders presented the idea to each organization in May.
“I talked to them in the month of May and in the month of June we spent time some time on getting the site coordinated, getting some vendors lined up, getting charities involved that the police chief and fire chief talked about, just getting the structure of the event planned,” Anders said. “We’re about about how things are particularly going to go as we continue to plan.”
There will be no charge to attend the games, but donations will be accepted.
“There will be donation opportunities at the gate and all those will be split between the charities that these entities decide to pick,” Anders said. “We’ll also have T-shirts for sale, I’m working on getting some customized softball with fire, police and EMS logos that will be for sale, they’ll be some vendors that will potentially be donating some of their proceeds to the charities as well. The city will not make a dime, it will all be for charity and it’s a good thing giving back to those people.”
Games will begin at 11 a.m. with Fire vs. Police followed by a 12:45 game between EMS and Fire and the 2:30 p.m. finale featuring the Police vs. EMS.
“This is all about building and boosting community morale,” Anders said. “These guys put their lives on the line all the time, we saw that when the wildfires going on, so this is just a good, fun day to support these people.”
