Six Brown County student-athletes will compete in seven events at the UIL Track and Field State Championships Thursday and Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.
On Thursday, Bangs’ Maggie Morales will take part in the both the Class 3A girls long jump and triple jump.
Morales finished as the runner-up in the long jump at the Region I-3A meet with a distance of 17-6.75, which ranks ninth among the qualifying performances of those in the state field. Also competing will be Cameron Yoe’s Yierra Fleming (19-11), Universal City Randolph’s Taylor Nunez (19-8.75), West’s Makayla Pavelka (19-5), New Diana’s Starrmia Dixon (18-10), Daingerfield’s Ashlyn Bruce (18-7.25), Malakoff’s Rayona Runnels (18-5.25), Tidehaven’s Mary Johnson (17-10), and Jacksboro’s Kylie Tullous (17-7.5)
Morales also placed second in the Region I-3A triple jump with a best effort of 36-3.75, which also ranks ninth among state competitors. The rest of the field features Cameron Yoe’s Yierra Fleming (39-1), Universal City Randolph’s Briana St. Louis (38-8), West’s Makayla Pavelka (38-1.75), Goliad’s Kyla Hill (38-1), Daingerfield’s Ashlyn Bruce (37-11.75), Fairfield’s Breyunna Dowell (37-10.5), Big Sandy Harmony’s Jenci Seahorn (37-8), and Brock’s Gracie Stephens (36-8).
Morales competes in the long jump at 9 a.m. Thursday and the triple jump at 1 p.m. Thursday.
On Saturday, three members of the May High School track and field team will vie for a state medal.
Region II-A boys 100 meters champion Kaden Halk, who ran a 11.23 in San Angelo, will compete at 6:05 p.m. in Austin. Halk is tied for the fifth-best time among the regional performances of the state qualifiers, along with Fannindel’s Contreal Judkins. The rest of the field features Burkeville’s LaTavion Mays (10.91), Milford’s Braedyn Woodward (11.05), Bruni’s Albert Esquivel (11.11), Springlake Earth’s Braxton Ethridge (11.22), Paducah’s Jakyen Wright (11.31), Rotan’s Jordan Daniel (11.41), and Dodd City’s Mason Rodriguez (11.43).
Fellow regional champion Amanda Harrell, who captured the Region III-A title in the discus with a best effort of 110 feet, will test her mettle at 9 a.m. Saturday. Harrell ranks fourth amongst the state field, which also includes Rocksprings’ Claire Burleson (124-8), La Sara’s Xiomara Rodriguez (117-2), Nordheim’s Danielle Wilson (111-4), Paducah’s Avery Blount (108-9), Sterling City’s Payton Conner (108-1), Lometa’s Sierra Tower (103-2), Lingleville’s Aly Macias (101-9), and Miami’s Elizabeth Gorecki (98-4).
Avery Williford came in second in the Region II-A boys discus with a 135-4 effort, which ranks third among state qualifiers. Williford will compete at 11 a.m. Saturday against Cherokee’s Joseph Bond (162-8), Benjamin’s Brody White (140-5), Rising Star’s Jake Bell (135-1), Morgan’s Kason Sims (134-10), Follett’s Ethan Gregory (134-7), Valley’s Gunnar Bowles (134-2), Bruni’s Jonaven Villarreal (126-10), and Chireno’s Risten Cook (124-9).
Brookesmith’s Elida Uvalle, the runner-up in the Region III-A girls shot put with a best effort of 34.6, will compete at 12:30 pm. Saturday. Uvalle is tied for the eighth-best regional performance and will compete against Nordheim’s Emagen Styra (38-5), Paint Rock’s Ashlynn Hall (38-4.75), Klondike’s Neihmaya Howard (36-8.75), Rocksprings’ Claire Burleson (36-6), Sterling City’s Payton Conner (36-4), Bluff Dale Eadee Turman (35-1.75), Robert Lee’s Braylee Hood (34-7.75), and Borden County’s Rexie Sanders (34-6).
Zephyr ‘s Jayden Millican placed second in the Region III-A boys long jump with a best leap of 20-1.5, which ranks ninth among the state qualifiers. Millican will compete at 9 a.m. Saturday against the likes of Wildorado’s Dustin Bryant (22-10.25), Whitharral Shamadrick Weaver (21-8), Valley’s Adrian Valdes (21-5.5), San Isidro Jaime Mendoza (21-5.25), Van Horn’s Bryce Virdell (21-4), Cross Plains’ Cason Allen (21-4), Dodd City’s Mason Rodriguez (21-0), and McDade’s Anthony Cottrill (20-11.5).
