As a team, the Lions finished sixth, just three strokes behind third-place Bridgeport. The top three teams and top three individuals not on a qualifying team move on to the 4A boys state tournament May 9-10 at Legends Golf Course in Kingsland.
Jones ranked as the third qualifying medalist behind Max Vergara of Levelland (74-69=143) and Chase Soles of Sweetwater (76-68=144). The low scores of the tournament belonged to Bridgeport’s Collin Moody (72-70=142) and Argyle’s Zane Griggs (73-69=142).
District 6-4A champion Brownwood finished with a 620 score over the two-day event, which trailed regional champion Argyle (577), runner-up Andrews (606), qualifier Bridgeport (617), Canyon (618), and Seminole (619). After an opening 321 Monday, which left them nine shots back of third place and in a tie for fifth, the Lions fired a 299 Tuesday.
“Our guys played fantastic today,” said Lions golf coach David Jones. “We shot 299 today which is the best I can remember in recent history. Everybody really tore it up and we just missed qualifying for state by three strokes. This is definitely the toughest region in the state but our guys, I can’t say enough about how good they were today. We made a statement today for sure, and as young as we are the future’s going to be pretty good. And Sir had a really great tournament to qualify for state. I was thrilled with the tournament. We played really well.”
Also competing for Brownwood at regionals were Hudson Reagan, who posted a 151 with rounds of 77 and 74; Cobe Walker, who finished with a 161 after shooting an 85 and a 76; Caleb Modawell, who turned in a 163 after rounds of 84 and 79; and Ethan Waldrop, who carded a 168 with an opening 88 and closing 80.
The District 6-4A runner-up Brownwood Lady Lions will compete in the Region I-4A girls golf tournament at Shadow Hills Wednesday and Thursday.
