The Old Jail will be brightly lit and, along with the main building, the site of the Museum of History’s 2022 fundraiser, ‘Bootleggers, Moonshine & the Mob’. All funds raised from the event will go to support the Museum and its educational programs. Activities for the night include tasting a variety of six whiskies from award-winning distilleries across Texas, paired with especially prepared gourmet appetizers. Non-alcoholic mocktails will also be served in the Museum’s basement, open for the evening and set up as a ‘speakeasy’, as part of the theme of the event.
Also being celebrated is the opening of the Museum’s newest exhibit. Ticket-holders will be the first to see the display ‘Bootleggers’, telling the story of 1920s Prohibition, which outlawed the sale of alcohol. Unexpected consequences included the development of moonshine, and gangster activity. Prohibition’s impact was felt in Brown County and across the U.S.
“It will be a fun and exciting night of responsibly sampling drinks, paired with amazing food, and exploring the history of America’s fascination with the Roaring 20s. In fact, anyone wanting to dress the part is welcome to come in costume”, invites Museum Coordinator Kyndall Howard. “We wanted the Old Jail to be a star of the evening. It is 119 years old, and for 78 years it served as a working jail and was a big part of law and order in this area. Preserving it as a museum is so important, and raising funds through this event helps make that possible.”
‘Bootleggers, Moonshine & the Mob’ will be Friday, April 22, 2022 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $45 each or $80 per couple.
