The axe throwing craze is taking downtown Brownwood by storm as Twisted Axes is joining the list of new businesses soon to open their doors.
Jason and Serena Dickey hope to debut their venture “in the next couple of weeks,” according to Serena. “We’re probably 75 percent of the way done.”
“The idea started when my husband and I went on an anniversary trip to Round Rock in January and we actually threw axes, and that was the first time we’d ever done it,” she said. “We’d heard of it, friends of ours had been to do it, but we had never done it. He’s the more businesses-minded one, he has his own business so he decided that would be something really cool to benefit Brownwood to bring revenue and people into the town. He hatched an idea and I just sat back and listened to him like a sounding board, I usually do that better.”
Dickey stated around a month ago the idea for the business took the first steps toward becoming a reality.
“Out of the blue about a month or so ago he started trying to get me talking to people about property,” Dickey said. “We settled on the old Ranger College location at 203 Fisk. We heard that we it had become available and we went down there and looked around. We had a blueprint in our head of what we wanted to do and went from there. He has his own construction company (JD Construction) so he’s been doing the remodeling.”
Regarding to Twisted Axes name, Dickey said, “A friend of mine actually came up with the name of it, but it sounded cool so we went with that. I had thrown out a whole list of ideas, we were throwing around anything with axe in it. Our logo is actually a tree trunk and it’s twisted with the axe sticking out of it, so she just said twisted axes and we thought that was cool.”
Dickey stated Twisted Axes will be family friendly, not serve alcohol and be open six days a week.
“If you want to bring your family in we’re allowing kids 10 and up to do it. We’re throwing ninja stars, cards, axes,” said Dickey, who added hours will likely be 2 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 2 to 11 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday. “We’re going to have reservations only on Sunday for church groups and stuff like that. It has to be at least eight people for a two-hour minimum.”
In the not too distant future, Twisted Axes intends to add a game room as well.
“It’s going to be geared toward those under the age of 10 so they have something to do also,” Dickey said.
Jason and Serena Dickey have lived in the area since 2000 and have four children who have graduated from Early High School.
“We would rather spend our money in this town than try and take it somewhere else,” Dickey said. “We’re trying to bring in more business and have something for the kids to do that doesn’t involve going out of town to be able to do it.”
