Mona Faye Turner, age 83, of Voss, died Monday morning on January 17, 2022. Mona Faye was born February 12, 1938, in Dublin, Texas, to the Reverend Vern Cook, and Josie Fowler Cook. She attended school in Dublin, TX until they moved to Gouldbusk, TX where her father was the pastor at the Methodist Congregational church there. Mona attended the Gouldbusk school until it consolidated with several of the other rural schools to become Mozelle. Mona excelled at volleyball and basketball. One semester before graduating from Mozelle, the family moved to Mississippi. She attended college at Mississippi Southern University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in education. She eventually earned her master’s degree in music and art through the Fort Hood Army University system. She taught school in Mississippi for two years and then moved back to Texas and taught in several schools in the Central Texas area, as well as the prison system until she retired. She attended, and often chaired many committees in the Coleman County area to include the Coleman Library Board and served on the Texas State Retired Teachers State Board.
Mona Faye was preceded in death by her parents, Reverend Vern and Josie Cook, sisters Reba Green, Valdene Whitehead, and son Melvin Wright.
She is survived by her husband, Bob Turner of Voss, son Steven Saloman, of Gouldbusk, Stepsons Darrell Turner and family of Everson, WA, Sammy Turner and family of Denton, TX, and Gary Turner of Midland, TX. And several nieces and nephews around the nation.
Pallbearers will be Chris Jamison, Benny Luera, Dwin Nanny, Anthony Strawn, Frank Van Pelt, and Hank Wise. Honorary pallbearers Jerry Allen, Steve Beal, Billy Bledsoe, Rick Jennings, John Green, Vern Green, Davey Thweatt, and Royce Whitehead.
Services will be Friday, January 21, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, Reverend John Allsbrooks officiating, with Reverend Neely Reynolds assisting. Visitation will start before the service from 12:00 noon, until 2:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Gouldbusk, TX Cemetery with reception to follow at the Gouldbusk United Methodist Church. Services are entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, in Coleman.
