Howard Payne University recently hosted The ARK Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Shelter’s Candlelight Vigil honoring victims of domestic violence and raising awareness of prevention efforts. The event was held in Grace Chapel and was attended by HPU students and faculty, local law enforcement, social work personnel and other members of the community.

The event is held annually as part of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. The ARK’s “Empty Shoes” display is featured each year at the HPU-hosted event. The display is comprised of pairs of shoes representing individuals in Central Texas who have died as a result of domestic violence.

“Domestic violence affects men, women and children from all socioeconomic levels, cultures and races,” said Rachel Derrington, director of the social work program at HPU and assistant professor of social work. “According to the Brownwood Police Department, domestic violence calls are received and responded to daily. It was inspiring to see so many community organizations represented at the Candlelight Vigil because, when we all work together, we can help prevent violence and help the victims heal.”

The event was sponsored by the HPU Department of Social Work.
