In a rematch of last year’s 92-86 overtime victory in the state semifinals, the Class A Division I No. 1 May Tigers look to upend the Blum Bobcats and remain undefeated at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
May (4-0) actually defeated Blum (1-3) twice last season, also collecting a 74-28 victory during the regular season.
This year, May has started the season with wins over Borden County (51-6), Sterling City (104-80), Knox City (65-16) and Evant (63-6). Blum’s lone win has come against Aquilla (42-28) in the season opener followed by losses to Waco Like Oak Classical (52-0), Gorman (47-34) and Jonesboro (45-0).
In the Tigers’ win over Evant last week, May finished with 281 yards of total offense – 221 rushing and 60 passing – while the defense recorded another touchdown.
Blake Harrell rushed for a team-high 87 yards followed by Damian Salinas with 52 yards and a touchdown, Kaden Halk with 45 yards and two scores, Avery Williford with 30 yards and a touchdown and Kaysen King with 7 yards and a trip to the end zone.
Through the air, Luke McKenzie connected on all three of his pass attempts for 34 yards and two scores, while Harrell was 2 of 3 for 26 yards with a scoring toss.
Leading receivers included Halk with two catches for 30 yards and a touchdown, Chase Martin with an 18-yard scoring reception, McKenzie with an 8-yard grab, and Salinas with a 4-yard scoring reception.
Defensively, standouts included Harrell (10 tackles and a tackle for loss), Williford (9 tackles, 2 fumbles caused and 1.5 tackles for loss), Brian Kunkel (8 tackles, and a fumble recovery for a touchdown), Salinas (7 tackles), Halk (6 tackles), King (2 tackles), McKenzie (1 tackle), and Bryson Guerrero (1 tackle).

Blanket (3-1) at Gholson (0-4)
7:30 p.m. Friday
The Blanket Tigers bounced back from their first loss of the season with a resounding victory over Zephyr, and look for their second win streak of the year as they venture to Gholson Friday night.
In Blanket’s 61-0 win at Zephyr last week, Brayden Day ignited the Tiger offense with 186 rushing yards and five touchdowns – from 7, 50, 27, 33 and 52 yards out – while also catching a 14-yard pass. Both Levi Vazquez and Carlos Morales chipped in 30 yards rushing and scored once.
Brennan Varner completed all five of his pass attempts for 59 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown to Ayden Wheeler.
Defensively, Day picked off two passes and returned one 55 yards for a touchdown, while also recovering a fumble and logging five tackles. Morales also tallied five tackles with a fumble recovery, Vazquez finished with five tackles, and Wheeler recorded three tackles with a fumble recovery.
Gholson has started its season with losses to Bynum (52-6), Three Way (56-8), Walnut Springs (46-0), and Waco Vanguard (52-0).

The Brookesmith Mustangs will attempt to snap a two-game losing streak and keep Blackwell winless as the two teams square off Saturday night.
Brookesmith dropped a 60-12 decision to Santa Anna last week as the Mustangs finished with 200 yards of total offense – 102 rushing and 98 passing – but committed five turnovers.
Tristen Slayton rushed for 93 yards and passed for 61 yards, while Conner Heard threw for 37 yards. Grant Featherston caught two passes for 36 yards, Kyler Cantu grabbed two receptions for 35 yards, Slayton finished with two catches for 19 yards and Heard caught two passes for 8 yards.
Defensively the Mustangs yielded 201 yards – 139 on the ground and 62 through the air – and forced a turnover.
Blackwell’s season has featured losses to Eden (40-34), Water Valley (51-0), Highland (61-34) and Throckmorton (40-32).

The Zephyr Bulldogs’ quest for their initial victory of the season continues Friday night as they make the drive to Paint Rock.
Zephyr’s season thus far has consisted of defeats at the hands of Sidney (21-18), Veribest (31-12), Stephenville Faith (65-19) and Blanket (61-0).
Statistics for the Bulldogs are not available.
Paint Rock has defeated Trent (59-38), Olfen (59-12) and Lohn (52-7) this season with its only loss at the hands of Rochelle (59-7).

Fort Worth Covenant Classical (3-0) at Richland Springs (2-1)

The Class A Division II No. 10 Richland Springs Coyotes are targeting a third consecutive victory as Fort Worth Covenant Classical comes to town Friday night.
Since a 62-34 loss to Marble Falls Faith, Richland Springs has rebounded with wins over Coolidge (66-32) and Nueces Canyon (70-22). Fort Worth Covenant Classical owns wins over Keene (54-6), Prosper Prestonwood Christian (64-19), and Watauga Harvest Christian (60-12).
In last week’s win over Nueces Canyon, the Coyotes allowed just 119 yards of total offense and forced a trio of turnovers, while churning out 345 yards – 211 passing and 134 rushing – and overcoming a pair of turnovers.
Jadeyn Bryant completed 6 of 9 passes for 207 yards with four touchdowns and one interception, while rushing for 73 yards and three more scores. Kelton Lusty chipped in 67 yards on the ground and scored once.
Leading receivers included Cohen Tharp with two grabs for 81 yards and a touchdown, while Zane Capps (45 yards), Jayden Sutherland (31 yards), and Nick Nilson (30 yards) also logged scoring receptions. Brandon Stewart caught a 20-yard pass as well.
Defensively, Capps led the attack with 11.5 tackles including eight for loss and two sacks, followed by Bryant with nine tackles and an interception, Lusty with 8.5 tackles, Sutherland with 5.5 and Nilson with 4.5.

Miles (1-3) at Cross Plains (3-1)

The Cross Plains Buffaloes will attempt to stretch their win streak to three games as they tangle with the Miles Bulldogs Friday night.
Since suffering their only loss to Goldthwaite (27-0), Cross Plains has responded with wins over Haskell (28-7) and De Leon (21-13). Miles picked up its first win last week over Munday (55-12) after dropping decisions to Coleman (24-0), Coahoma (54-0) and Roscoe (43-24).
In the win over De Leon last week, the Buffaloes finished with 301 yards of total offense – 193 passing and 108 rushing – with one turnover, while allowing 321 yards – 190 through the air and 131 on the ground – with a pair of takeaways.
Kade Purvis completed 14 of 27 passes with scoring tosses of 20 yards to Ryan Reed and 77 yards to Ryan Hopkins. Leading receivers included Hopkins with five for 120 yards, Reed and Nick Moses each with two grabs for 24 yards, Spade Koenig with two for 9, and Allen and Dusty Wyatt each caught 6-yard passes.
Allen’s 84 yards on the ground were a team-high followed by 13 from Moses and 12 from Wyatt.
Defensively, Gus Nickerson intercepted a De Leon pass and Nick Hillis scooped up a fumble.

Colorado City (0-3) at Coleman (3-0)
7 p.m. Friday
The undefeated Coleman Bluecats, ranked No. 11 in Class 2A Division I this week by Harris Ratings Weekly, are shooting for a fourth straight win to open the 2021 campaign as winless Colorado City visits for homecoming.
Coleman has upended Miles (24-0), Anson (33-6) and Grape Creek (49-0) to start the season while Colorado City has come up short against Crane (28-6), Ballinger (27-0) and Coahoma (26-12).
In the win over Grape Creek last week, Coleman scored all its points in the first half – 21 in the first quarter and 28 in the second – as the Bluecats finished with 339 yards of total offense. Defensively, Coleman yielded 120 yards – 89 on the ground and 48 through the air.
Jadin Jackson rushed for 80 of Coleman’s 231 yards on the ground and scored twice, while Denver Hunter chipped in 63 yards and a touchdown. Brent Bouldin added 25 yards and a score, Ryland Gentry rushed for 17 yards and a touchdown and Dayden Hunter chipped in 16 yards with a trip to the end zone.
Jackson also completed 6 of 8 passes for 106 yards with a scoring toss to Braxton Smith, who pulled down three catches for 77 yards. Gentry added a 22-yard catch, Hagen Cavanaugh grabbed a 15-yard reception and Denver Hunter caught a 7-yard pass.
Defensive standouts for Coleman included Gentry with 15 tackles including four for loss, Christian Espitia with eight tackles, and Will Faries with seven tackles with three for loss.
According to Harris Ratings Weekly, Coleman is a 33-point favorite.

Christoval (3-1) at Goldthwaite (2-2)
7:30 p.m. Friday
The Goldthwaite Eagles will attempt to rebound from a narrow defeat as the Class 2A Division No. 14 Christoval Cougars visit Friday night.
Goldthwaite’s two-game win streak was snapped in a 10-7 loss to Florence last week on a field goal as time expired.
The Eagles finished with 215 yards of total offense – 195 rushing and 20 passing – but turned the ball over three times, while Goldthwaite allowed 290 yards – 224 on the ground and 66 through the air – with one turnover.
Jackson Patrick rushed for a team-high 64 yards and a touchdown and also passed for 20, while Seth Gardner added 49 yards on the ground. Cooper Auldridge hauled in both receptions for Goldthwaite.
Christoval was dealt its first loss last week to Roscoe (42-30) after knocking off Wink (14-6), Grape Creek (55-7), and Sonora (33-14).
The Cougars average 330 yards – 221 rushing and 79 passing – per game, led by quarterback Kyle Loehman’s 409 passing yards and five touchdowns, Josh Fava’s 605 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, and Beau Jolly’s 11 catches for 176 yards and a touchdown. Cayden Carpenter has chipped in six catches for 67 yards and three scores.

San Saba (0-4) at Dublin (3-1)
7:30 p.m. Friday
The San Saba Armadillo will attempt to secure their elusive first victory of the season as they make the trek to Dublin Friday night.
San Saba’s season has featured losses to Eldorado (42-20), Rogers (46-14), Mason (35-28) and Llano (48-18). Dublin’s only blemish is a loss to Albany (48-21) with wins over De Leon (43-7), Anson (21-14) and Brady (38-12).
In the Armadillos’ defeat at the hands of Llano last week, Lance Taylor completed 26 of 41 passes for 260 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions for San Saba, as Tyler Johnson grabbed nine receptions for 99 yards with a score. Drake Bryant chipped in six catches for 64 yards with a trip to the end zone, and Tegen Suiz finished with three grabs for 19 yards and a touchdown. Franco Franco and Weston Lackey both recorded three catches for 18 yards, Reagan Mejia caught a 24-yard pass and Zuri Herrera added a 19-yard reception.
On the ground, San Saba mustered just 26 of its 286 total yards, with Suiz rushing for a team-best 16 yards.
Defensively, Herrera recorded a team-best 11 tackles against Llano (3-1) followed by Mejia with nine, and Suiz with eight.
The Lions average 344 yards – 297 passing and 47 rushing – per game, led by quarterback Chris Teten’s 1,186 passing yards and 14 touchdowns, Cameron Patton’s 110 rushing yards and one touchdown, and receivers Dalan Rasberry (22-315, 3 TDs), Christian Ramirez (13-231, 3 TDs), and Tyler Harrell (13-206, 2 TDs).

Comanche (0-4) at Cisco (3-1)
7:30 p.m. Friday
The Comanche Indians’ bid for their victory takes them to Cisco Friday night where the Class 2A Division I No. 4 Loboes await.
Comanche has fallen to Mason (34-13), Brady (46-19), Early (58-14) and Tolar (42-25). Meanwhile, Cisco is coming off a loss to Jim Ned (28-14) after defeating Clyde (49-7), Wall (27-21) and Breckenridge (28-27).
Against Tolar last week, Comanche finished with 463 yards of total offense – a season-high 302 passing to go along with 161 rushing.
Hudson Welch completed 17 of 29 passes for 302 yards with three scoring tosses while also rushing for 37 yards. Miguel Martinez led all receivers with eight catches for 164 yards and two touchdowns, including a 96-yard reception. Kyler Beaty added two grabs for 80 yards and a score, Ayden Fishback hauled in three receptions for 21 yards, Luke Wilson caught two passes for 22 yards, and Layden Welch pulled down two catches for 15 yards.
Wilson finished with a team-high 107 yards and one touchdown rushing while Martinez chipped in 17 yards.
Defensively for the Indians, Layden Welch logged a team-high 11 tackles followed by Easton Gonzales with eight and Dom Rios with six.
The Loboes average 340 yards – 292 rushing and 48 passing – per game, led by quarterback Hunter Long’s 714 rushing yards and seven touchdowns and 190 passing yards and four scores, running back Trent Huston’s 385 yards and three scores, and receiver Dawson Hearne’s three catches for 33 yards and two scores.
