GLEN ROSE – After winning two of four matches Friday to start the Glen Rose volleyball tournament, the Brownwood Lady Lions ran the table Saturday, notching four victories to claim the silver bracket championship.
Brownwood first defeated Whitney 25-14, 25-14; then Iowa Park 25-8 25-17 for the second time in as many days; Fredericksburg, 25-20, 25-22, to reach the final; and Saginaw 25-23, 19-25, 25-21 in the silver bracket championship game.
Olivia Fowler and Tessa Goodwin were selected to the all-tournament team.
“We came in and took care of business,” said Lady Lions third-year head coach Allison Smith. “All of the girls got to see the court this weekend. Every one of them
stepped up to the challenges we faced and we came out successful.”
In the win over Whitney, Gracie Boswell with seven kills followed by Fowler with five, Goodwin and Jordan Northcutt with three apiece, Kylie Morris with two and Jaylen Savage with one.
Kylie Wooten dished out nine assists followed by Goodwin with six, Boswell with two, and Fowler and Ibis Alvarado with one apiece.
Fowler served a team-best three aces trailed by two each from Morris and Boswell and one apiece by Goodwin, Izzy Sherman and Kassidy Wooten.
Defensively, Fowler logged nine digs trailed by eight from Boswell, seven from Goodwin, five from Kassidy Wooten, three each from Morris, Alvarado and Ashlyn Harris, and one each by Northcutt and Molly Oliver.
Goodwin and Morris finished with three blocks apiece while Savage and Boswell each contributed one.
Against Iowa Park, Goodwin paced the attack with seven kills followed by Fowler, Boswell and Morris with five apiece, Savage with three and Northcutt with a pair
Kylie Wooten distributed 15 assists, Goodwin chipped in 11 and Fowler tacked on one.
Kylie Wooten also served a team-best two aces and Boswell added one.
On the defensive end, Morris finished with 11 digs trailed by Kylie Wooten with eight, Goodwin and Boswell with seven apiece, Kassidy Wooten with six, and Fowler and Savage with five each.
Savage led the way with three blocks while Fowler and Morris recorded two and Boswell tallied one.
“Against Whitney we took control and got a good momentum going into our Iowa Park game,” Smith said. “We played them tough and attacked from the start and threw them off their game.”
Versus Fredericksburg, Fowler spearheaded the offense with seven kills aided by six from Savage, four from Boswell, three from Goodwin, and two from Morris.
Kylie Wooten recorded 11 assists while Goodwin chipped in five.
Morris served two aces while Kassidy Wooten and Kylie Wooten contributed one each.
On the defensive end Boswell registered 13 digs trailed by Fowler with nine, Morris with eight, Kylie Wooten with seven,
Goodwin and Kassidy Wooten with four each and Savage with one.
Savage chalked up six blocks, Goodwin added two and Boswell and Northcutt finished with one apiece.
In the finale against Saginaw, Goodwin recorded 13 kills followed by eight from Fowler, six from Boswell, five from Savage, three from Morris, and one from Northcutt.
Kylie Wooten notched 19 assists followed by Goodwin with 10 and Boswell with two.
Kylie Wooten also served three aces trailed by Fowler and Morris with two each and Kassidy Wooten with one.
Defensively, Fowler netted 22 digs followed by 18 from Boswell, 12 from Morris, nine from Kassidy Wooten, eight from Kylie Wooten, five from Goodwin, and two from Savage.
Morris chalked up five blocks, Northcutt added three, Fowler and Savage tallied two each and Goodwin was credited with one.
“Against Fredericksburg we faced a huge challenge and great program,” Smith said. “They are a solid team but Jaylen Savage and Kylie Morris in the middle blocking positions shut down their hitters and we attacked and stayed strong playing smart and not timid. We clinched a win and then took that same approach against another very good program with Saginaw and took home the victory.”
The Lady Lions (9-2) are off until Friday when they take part in the Argyle tournament.
