GLEN ROSE – The Brownwood Lady Lions on Friday posted a 2-2 record during the opening day of the Glen Rose volleyball tournament.
Brownwood chalked up straight-set wins over Iowa Park and Fort Worth Eastern Hills while falling at the hands of Bridgeport and Gunter.
“We faced some challenges today against Gunter and Bridgeport who have good programs and solid teams,” said Lady Lions third-year head coach Allison Smith. “We allowed Bridgeport to have a lot of control over their game and we didn’t capitalize when we needed to. As for Iowa Park, we played a great game and cut down our errors and bounced back when we needed to. Versus Eastern Hills, the girls took care of business and did their jobs quickly and efficiently.”
The Lady Lions began tournament action with a 25-22, 25-23 triumph over Iowa Park – their fourth straight win to open the season.
Offensive standouts included Olivia Fowler with seven kills followed Tessa Goodwin with five, three from Kylie Morris, two each from Jaylen Savage and Gracie Boswell, one by Jordan Northcutt.
Kylie Wooten recorded 12 assists while Goodwin contributed seven and Kassidy Wooten added one.
Fowler served four aces trailed by two each from Goodwin and Kylie Wooten, and one from Boswell.
Defensively, Boswell registered 12 digs followed by nine from Kassidy Wooten, seven each from Fowler, Goodwin and Kassidy Wooten, six from Morris, and two from Izzy Sherman.
At the net, Savage tallied two blocks while Morris and Northcutt logged one apiece.
Brownwood concluded Friday’s competition with a 25-5, 25-5 rout of Eastern Hills as the entire roster saw action.
Northcutt and Fowler each finished with two kills while Morris, Goodwin, Boswell, Ava Choate and Ibis Alvarado contributed one apiece.
Kylie Wooten distributed four aces, two each came from Alvarado and Ashlyn Harris and Goodwin was credited with one.
Boswell served seven of Brownwood’s 20 aces followed by Fowler with four, Sherman and Kassidy Wooten with three each, and Goodwin, Alvarado and Kylie Wooten with one apiece.
Boswell chalked up six digs followed by Kassidy Wooten with four, Fowler with two, and Morris, Choate and Molly Oliver with one each.
Morris notched the Lady Lions’ two blocks.
The Lady Lions dropped a three-set decision to Bridgeport 25-20, 23-25, 25-19.
Offensively, Fowler collected eight kills trailed by Boswell with seven, Morris and Savage with five each, Goodwin with four, and Northcutt with three.
Goodwin registered a team-high 15 assists followed by Kylie Wooten with 12, Boswell with two, and Fowler with one.
At the service line, Morris, Kassidy Wooten, and Kylie Wooten each notched one ace.
Defensively, Boswell chalked up 27 digs followed by Kassidy Wooten with 22, Fowler with 21, Morris with 12, Goodwin with 10, and Kylie Wooten with nine.
Morris led the Lady Lions with five blocks, followed by Boswell with two, while Savage, Goodwin, and Northcutt were each credited with one.
Brownwood also suffered a 25-19, 25-15 defeat at the hands of Gunter, which marked the first defeat of the season.
Morris and Boswell led the offense with four kills apiece, Goodwin and Fowler added two each, and Savage and Northcutt both contributed one.
Eight assists were dished out by Kylie Wooten with five coming from Goodwin.
Kassidy Wooten served two aces while one apiece were delivered by Fowler and Goodwin
Defensively, Fowler tallied a team-high eight digs trailed by Boswell with seven, five each by Morris, Kassidy Wooten and Kylie Wooten, and two by Goodwin
At the net, Morris and Goodwin both logged three blocks followed by one each from Savage and Boswell.
The Lady Lions (5-2) resume tournament action at 10 a.m. Saturday as they will face Whitney in their silver bracket opener.
