SWEETWATER – The Brownwood High tennis team collected two victories by counts of 15-4 over Sweetwater and San Angelo Lake Tuesday in the first action of the fall campaign.
In the win over Lake View, Brownwood won six of seven doubles matches.
The Lady Lions doubles teams went undefeated with victories claimed by No. 1 Aishwarya Nigayle and Victoria Ramos (8-0 over Analeah Zamora and Jacie Carpenter), No. 2 Natalie Mares and Emma Delgado (8-2 over Gabby Flores and Liz Mota), and No. 3 Claire Meinecke and Raylei Hickey (8-1 over Kim Toscano and Samantha Perez).
For the Lions, doubles wins belonged to the No. 2 duo of Nathan Ramos and Taylor Wallace (8-6 over Freddie Saucedo and Chase Danielsch) and No. 3 tandem Eric Waldrop and Wesley Goodrich (8-5 over Seth Rangel and Sherman).
The mixed doubles victory for Brownwood was tallied by River Prado and Tatum Dehart (default).
The Lady Lions also swept singles competition with wins earned by No. 1 Ramos (6-0, 6-0 over Zamora), No. 2 Nigayle (6-1, 6-1 over Carpenter), No. 3 Dehart (6-4, 6-1 over Flores), No. 4 Mares (6-0, 7-5 over Mota), No. 5 Delgado (6-2, 1-6, 10-7 over Toscano), and No. 6 Hickey (6-1, 6-0 over Perez).
Notching singles wins for the Lions were No. 3 Ramos (7-6 [9], 6-3 over Saucedo), No. 4 Prado (6-1, 6-1 over Danielsch), and No. 5 Wallace (6-0, 6-1 over Sherman).
“Both us and Lake View lost a few players from the previous year and they beat us 10-9 last year so to come out and win that match was a great start to the year,” said Brownwood tennis head coach Crystal Blazek.
In the victory over Sweetwater, Prado defeated Lava (8-2) in No. 2 singles and Wallace knocked off Ceballos (8-4) in No. 4 singles. The rest of the Lions’ wins came by default.
The lone match that did not end up in a default victory for the Lady Lions was No. 1 singles, where Madalyn Scull topped Morgan Strebeck (6-4, 6-3).
“Sweetwater was short on girls but the guys had some tough competition against them,” Blazek said. “The girls matched up against All Saints out of Lubbock and also played well. We didn’t get a full team match out of that one but it was a great day and start to the year.”
Brownwood (2-0) is back in action Saturday as it hosts Killeen High at 9 a.m. and Godley at 1:30 p.m. in its first home matches of the season.
