Brown County Home Solutions on Thursday, July 1, opened their severe weather shelter to those needing to find relief from the summer heat. Open in the winter months as a shelter from the cold, this is the first time the shelter is available because of the heat.
“There are two different programs, they just happen to be in the same place. The cooling station is open Monday through Friday from noon to 5:00 pm. People can come in, they can cool off, they can get a sandwich, cold water and we’ve got games and stuff back there,” said Linda Heitman, director of Brown County Home Solutions.
Also opening on Thursday is the shelter which is open seven days per week from 5:00 pm to 8:00 am.
“We’re accepting everyone. We have the women and families upstairs, like we did last winter, and the men will be downstairs. The set up for the shelter will be the same as last year,” Heitman said.
The cooling station and shelter will only be open for two months, July and August. They will also reopen when the weather turns cold this winter.
The location is 1101 Avenue D, or the corner of Durham and Avenue D.
