Brownwood Lions fans in search of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine can find a very special exclusive edition in town.
As of Wednesday afternoon, commemorative editions of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine with the Brownwood Lions pictured on the cover are available for $20 at the Texas Farm Bureau Insurance-Brown County office, located at 2450 Highway 377 South, with all proceeds going toward the Brownwood Lions Mothers Club.
The inside of the cover features four questions asked of head coach Sammy Burnett while the inside of the back cover features the 2021 varsity roster and schedule.
Digging deeper into the publication, the Lions are picked to finish fourth in District 5-4A Division I behind No. 5 Waco La Vega, No. 10 Midlothian Heritage and No. 18 Stephenville. The top four teams earn playoff berths as Waxahachie Life is projected to come in fifth and Alvarado sixth.
Players to watch for the Lions, coming off a 4-6 campaign with a 2-2 district mark, include center Ethan Pesina, receiver Jason Jackson, safety Jordan Leach, quarterback/linebacker Chance Jones, tight/end safety Taylor Bessent, offensive lineman Brandon Still, offensive lineman Damian Sanchez, athlete Case Markham, linebacker Jaylen Brown, receiver Thad Hinds, and receiver/linebacker Brayden Daub.
As for Brown County’s other two 11-man programs, the Early Longhorns are picked to make a repeat postseason appearance and finish third in District 3-3A Division I behind only reigning state champion Jim Ned and Wall. The Longhorns are tabbed to place ahead of Clyde, Breckenridge and San Angelo TLCA.
In District 2-3A Division II, the Bangs Dragons are also expected to finish third coming in behind Ballinger and Sonora. Bangs is anticipated to place ahead of Brady, Grape Creek and Ingram Moore.
In Class A Division I, the May Tigers – coming off a state championship game appearance – enter the season ranked No. 3 and the favorites of District 13. The Tigers are projected to finish ahead of Gorman, Baird, Santa Anna and Lingleville. May’s Kaden Halk is the preseason offensive player of the year for District 13-A Division I.
District 15-A Division I features the Zephyr Bulldogs, who are projected to finish fourth behind No. 6 Jonesboro, No. 20 Lometa and Evant.
Despite new headed coaches for both programs, the Blanket Tigers and Brookesmith Mustangs are again anticipated to finish atop the District 15-A Division II standings. The Tigers are the district favorites, with the Mustangs tabbed to come in second ahead of Sidney, Rising Star and Panther Creek. Brookesmith’s Avery Williford is the preseason offensive MVP in the district and Blanket’s Brayden Day is the preseason defensive MVP.
Outside Brown County, the Richland Springs Coyotes – also coming off a state championship game appearance – are the preseason No. 2 team in Class A Division II and are expected to win the District 16 title. Jadeyn Bryant is the preseason offensive MVP for the district.
In District 8-2A Division II, the Cross Plains Buffaloes are projected to place third behind No. 5 Albany and Santo, and ahead of Hico and Meridian.
Meanwhile, the District 4-2A Division I race is forecast to finish with No. 5 Cisco on top followed by No. 17 San Saba, Coleman, Winters, Goldthwaite and De Leon. San Saba’s Reagan Mejia is the preseason defensive MVP.
In District 5-3A Division II, the Comanche Indians are expected to come in fourth behind No. 19 Eastland, No. 23 Jacksboro and Millsap, and finish ahead of Dublin and Merkel.
