Dallas Cowboys Hall of Famer and Super Bowl XII Co-MVP Randy White was on hand at the new Allsup’s in Bangs Friday afternoon signing autographs as part of the grand opening week festivities for Store #2272.
“There’s quite a few people here so it’s looking like it’s going to be a good event,” White said in an interview with KOXE prior to beginning his autograph session. “I just signed a couple of footballs (for the Cherry Pie Auction). Y’all do a great job with that and I encourage everyone to support that. Hopefully I can try and get some more stuff down here for your auction.”
White, a nine-time All-Pro and nine-time Pro Bowler, was drafted second overall in 1975 and played 14 years for the Cowboys. White was born in Pittsburgh, grew up in Delaware and attended the University of Maryland.
“I was a Ray Nitschke fan growing up because I watched the Green Bay Packers,”
White said. “He was mean, he had a bald head, and he no teeth and he growled. Then I came and met Lee Roy Jordan and then he became my hero.”
White, 68, also recalled his experiences with Brownwood natives Bob and Doug Young.
“I used to play against a guy that played down the road here, Bob Young, he played for Brownwood and the Cardinals,” White said. “I played against he and his brother Doug, they held the two-man world dead lift, so I’m familiar a little bit with this area. I’m glad to be down here, I want to thank everyone for coming out.”
Allsup’s grand opening specials continue through midnight Saturday, which include buy one burrito or chimichanga get one free, 49 cents each for coffee, a sausage biscuit or a Tallsup, 99 cents for a dozen eggs and $2.99 for a gallon of milk.
