Garland Wayne Newman, 85, of Early, Texas passed away Friday, May 14, 2021. A visitation with family will be held at Heartland Funeral Home from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, Sunday May 15, 2021. A graveside service will be 2:00 PM, Monday, May 17, 2021 at Eastlawn Memorial Park officiated by Don Armstrong.

Garland was born September 3, 1935 in Snyder, Texas to Thomas and Bessie Newman. Garland’s grandfather was the Sheriff of Scurry County at that time and Thomas and Bessie went to stay with his parents due to Bessie being due. Garland was born in the Sheriff’s living quarters of the Scurry County Jail, so he always told everyone that he was born in jail. He graduated from high school in Snyder and attended Western Texas College and Texas Tech University. Garland married his beloved Barbara Parks in 1955, a union that blessed them with three children. He worked as a production foreman in the oilfield for Texaco and Apache until his retirement when he moved to Blanket, bought some land and started tending cattle. Garland got a kick out of playing practical jokes on his co-workers and grandkids. Garland and Barbara enjoyed bowling on leagues several nights a week, they were involved in square dancing and enjoyed spending time together. Their grandkids and great- grandkids were his pride and joy and he loved taking them hunting and fishing. While in the boat, he made sure to have his pole in the best fishing spot. Granny packed a pee bucket and a snack sack for the kids because if the fish were biting, Grandpa was not leaving the fishing hole. Each grandkid quickly learned, “do not play in the minnow’s bucket because you get oils on them!” Garland loved time with the family and when they were apart, he spent the majority of his time in retirement watching his cows and loving on his dogs.

Garland is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Newman of Early; daughters, Donna Howington and husband, Robert of Snyder and Debbie Quick and husband Mylee of Blanket; son, Gary Newman of Early; Grandchildren, Chris Roemisch and wife Debbie of Austin, Michelle Byrom and husband Matthew of Snyder, Brad Roemisch and wife Leslie of Midland, Tiffany Brush and husband Landon of Blanket, Shawn Roemisch of Snyder and Brayden Quick and wife Chelsea of Eula; 12 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Garland was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Newman and Bessie Sawyer Newman and brothers, Doyle, Tommy, Bill and Jimmy Don Newman.

Online Condolences, tributes and memorials can be shared with the family at www.heartlandfuneralhome.net.
