BRECKENRIDGE – The District 8-3A runner-up Early Longhorns are facing an uphill climb in their Region I-3A baseball bi-district playoff series following Friday night’s 15-5 loss to District 7-3A third Breckenridge.
Early (19-9) yielded the first 13 runs of the game – three each in the first and second innings and seventh in the bottom of the fourth – before striking for all five of its runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Breckenridge (16-8) pitcher Camden Escalon limited Early to four hits with seven strikeouts and five walks.
Riley Hill doubled and drove in a run while Tyson Tyler, Gavin Sanders and Caydon Laird added singles for the Longhorns. Caleb McCullough and Jaxyn Price were credited with RBIs.
The Longhorn pitching trio of Hill, Kyle Ivey and Sanders issued a total of 15 walks, surrendered nine hits and struck out a dozen batters.
Ayden Reyes sparked Breckenridge with two hits and four RBIs while Jonas Arellano chipped in a pair of hits while plating two runners.
Games 2 and 3, if needed, begin at 1 p.m. Saturday in Early.
