The Howard Payne Lady Jackets snapped an 11-game skid with a 6-5 victory over Concordia Saturday in the final contest of an American Southwest Conference three-game series.
Concordia got on the board first, but Howard Payne answered, scoring Tori Muro on a throwing error by the first baseman to make the score 1-1.
The Lady Jackets had a huge third inning. Alexis Sullivan hit an RBI single through the right side to score Aurora Luera. Tori Muro batted next, reaching on a fielder’s choice to plate Kylie Persons. Deandra Longoria grounded out, allowing Alexis Sulivan to come home, giving the lady jackets a 4-1 lead.
Howard Payne scored one run in the fourth inning to increase their lead to four. Kylie Persons hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Ragen Noriega.
Concordia scored three runs in the fifth inning and one run in the sixth inning to tie the game. Howard Payne took their lead back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on an Alexis Sullivan single that plated Brianna Lopez.
The Lady Jackets kept the tornados from scoring in the top of the seventh to claim the 6-5 victory.
The Lady Jackets outhit the tornados 11-10. Aurora Luera led HPU, going 3-for-4 at the plate. Alexis Sullivan added two hits and two RBI.
HPU’s Tia Campos (7-10) recorded the win in relief, throwing 3.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits. Bree Cason had the no-decision going 3.2 innings, allowing one run on five hits.
Howard Payne improves to 13-18 on the season and 8-16 in conference play. Concordia moves to 22-12 overall and 16-8 in the conference.
The Lady Jackets will conclude the regular season with three home games against Sul Ross next weekend – a 1 p.m. Friday doubleheader and a single game at noon Saturday.
