STEPHENVILLE – The Brownwood High tennis team earned two regional berths Tuesday, and a third is still in play as the District 6-4A tournament is being carried over into a third day Wednesday.
Brownwood’s mixed doubles team of Peter Le and Victoria Ramos captured the 6-4A title from their position as the third seed, while Mo Goff finished as the runner-up in boys singles. Both entries will advance to the Region I-4A tennis tournament that will be held at Texas Tech’s McLeod Tennis Center April 26-29.
“I thought overall the team did really well,” said Brownwood High tennis coach Crystal Blazek. “I saw them play some of the best tennis they have played all year. I’m excited for the ones that advanced to regionals because they have worked so hard for the opportunity.”
The girls doubles draw is still unresolved as a conflict with UIL One-Act Play competition on Tuesday is forcing the bracket to be completed at 9 a.m. Thursday in Brownwood.
The Lady Lions tandem of Lillian Jonescue and Aaliyah Uvalle will battle Lampasas’ Valdez/Clements duo for a district championship, while Aishwarya Nigayle and Trinity Sessoms will compete with the Flores/Meyer duo from Lampasas for third place.
The first and second place teams from each event move on to regionals, however, playback matches could be involved. If the loser of the championship match has not already defeated the third-place team en route to the final, those two teams will square off to determine the district’s No. 2 seed in a particular draw.
Le and Ramos defeated Warren/Sun of Gatesville, 6-0, 6-4 in the final after knocking off Martinez/L.Mitchell of Gatesville, 6-3, 6-0, and Smith/Jones of Stephenville, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to advance.
Goff fell to Sloan Early of Gatesville in the final, 6-1, 7-6 [6] after defeating Alex Herrera of Glen Rose, 6-0, 6-0, and Alex Scott of Gatesville, 6-3, 6-7 [4], 6-4 following a first-round bye.
Jonescue and Uvalle downed Edmond/Moran of Gatesvillem 6-1, 6-0, and Flores/Moyer of Lampasas, 6-4, 6-2 to reach the final. Sessoms and Nigayle upended Post/Underwood of Stephenville, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 and Alexander/A. Mitchell of Gatesville, 7-5, 6-4, before dropping a match to Valdez/Clements of Lampasas, 6-3, 6-0.
