Coupled with Tuesday’s 2-1 loss at Lampasas, the Lions are now 4-4 in district and 8-9 overall, essentially tied with Gatesville (13-8, 3-3) – who Brownwood faces twice next week – for third place. Lampasas (9-13-1, 6-2) remained on the heels of Stephenville (12-8, 5-1) in the race for the 6-4A title.
Knotted at 4 after one inning, Lampasas surged in front, 6-4, in the top of the third. Tak Stinnett led off with a single against Brownwood’s Gavin Brandstetter – who gave up six runs, three earned, on eight hits with two strikeouts and no walks over three innings – then Nate Borchardt was hit by a pitch with one out. Keagan Richardson followed with a two-RBI double down the left field line to plate the decisive runs.
Atticus Porter pitched the final four innings for the Lions and yielded just three hits with a pair of strikeouts.
The Lions got a run back in the sixth inning as Reece Bolton singled with one out, then came home when Owen Huntsinger reached on one of Lampasas’ five errors. Huntsinger was left stranded at second base, however, one of eight Lions left on base by the Badger pitching duo of Borchardt and Gauge Gholson.
Lampasas jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a two-run single by Hayden Waldrip, an RBI double by Borchardt and an RBI single from Richardson, along with a pair of Brownwood errors.
Brownwood clawed back in the bottom of the first inning to forge a 4-all tie. Bolton singled and Huntsinger walked, then a Hobbs base hit coupled with an error allowed Bolton to score the first run. Byron Foster followed with an RBI single that knocked in Huntsinger to trim the deficit to 4-2. Brandstetter and Day then reached on consecutive miscues allowing Hobbs and Foster to even the score at 4.
The Lions are back in action at 7 p.m. Tuesday as they host Gatesville, which won the first meeting between the two teams, 8-7, in extra innings.
