Stephenville (10-7-1, 3-1) pitcher Reece Elston held the Lions (7-7, 2-2) without a hit through five innings and gave up just two hits with six strikeouts and one walk.
While the Brownwood offense labored, the Yellow Jackets put two runs up in the first inning along with single runs in the third and fourth. The Lions closed the gap to 4-1 in the top of the sixth, but the Yellow Jackets fired back with four runs in the bottom of the inning to essentially put the game out of reach.
Owen Huntsinger and Gavin Brandstetter recorded doubles for the Lions, while Byron Foster and Case Markham chalked up RBIs.
On the mound, Hunter Day, Atticus Porter and Foster combined to yield six earned runs on nine hits with six walks and two strikeouts. The Lions defense committed the only three errors of the game.
Stephenville’s Charlie Hughes went 3 for 3 with 5 RBIs at the plate.
Brownwood starts the second round of district action at 7 p.m. Tuesday as it welcomes Glen Rose.
