The Howard Payne Lady Jackets won two of three softball games from Louisiana College over the weekend to remain one game back of first place in the West Division standings.
The Lady Jackets opened the series with a 3-2 win, Louisiana College the middle game 2-1, and HPU returned the favor with a 2-1 triumph in the finale.
In Friday’s 3-2 win, an Alexis Sullivan walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning secured the win. HPU grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an Aurora Luera triple plus a fielding error. The Lady Jackets regained a 2-1 edge in the fifth on a solo home run by Zaleigh Perez.
HPU’s notched eight hits – three by Luera, two each by Sullivan and Tori Muro and Perez’s blast.
In the circle, Tia Campos went the distance and gave up two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
Saturday’s 2-1 win saw the Lady Jackets tally both their runs in the fourth inning on a two-run round-tripper by Sullivan, which also scored Kiley Persons.
Campos and Bree Cason teamed up to toss a five-hitter, allowing just a seventh-inning run to Lousiaian College (9-12, 4-5) with two strikeouts and a pair of walks.
The Lady Jackets won despite picked up just three hits – by Sullivan, Persons and Luera.
Howard Payne (12-7, 7-5) will visit McMurry (11-6, 7-5) for a three-game ASC series Thursday and Friday.
