First responders were dispatched shortly after noon Monday to a fire inside the Canidae pet food facility, formerly Ethos, at 3101 Stephen F. Austin.
Upon arrival of the Brownwood Fire Department, Lifeguard EMS, Brownwood Police Department and Brown County’s Sheriff Office, smoke was barreling out of the building and flames were showing on the exterior.
Asked about the situation, a Canidae employee stated he could not comment.
According to Brownwood Assistant Fire Chief James LeMond, no injuries were reported and 20 employees were evacuated during the blaze.
Damages to the plant include the roof, machinery and product, totaling approximately $4 million.
About 50 percent of the Canidae facility will be operational as further damage is evaluated and repairs take place.
