RICHARDSON – The Howard Payne Lady Jackets improved to 5-1 on the season and stand atop the American Southwest Conference West Division standings following Friday’s 3-0 and 4-0 victories over UT-Dallas.
In the opening 3-0 win, Bree Cason tossed a complete-game, three-hit shutout with six strikeouts and three walks.
Howard Payne (5-1, 2-0) scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings and collected 11 hits.
Aurora Luera, Deandra Longoria and Tori Muro notched two hits apiece while Kiley Persons, Alexis Sullivan, Alyssa Corpus, Ragen Noriega and Zaleigh Perez each chipped in a hit. Persons and Noriega collected RBIs.
In the 4-0 triumph, Tia Campos hurled a five-hit, complete-game shutout with a pair of strikeouts.
The Lady Jackets scored once in the first and fifth innings, and twice in the third.
The seven-hit HPU attack featured a pair from Sullivan, including a home run, and two from Luera as well. Longoria, Noriega and Kayla Hill chipped in hits as well, and Longoria and Hill drove in runs.
The series finale with UT-Dallas (0-7, 0-2) will take place at noon Saturday.
