Trailing 6-4 heading to the bottom of the fourth inning, the Brownwood Lions tallied five of the final six runs to rally past the Andrew Mustangs for a 9-7 victory Friday night at Morris Southall Field in Brown County Invitational baseball action.
The Lions (2-2) closed the gap to 6-5 in the bottom of the fourth as Owen Huntsinger’s two-out fly ball was dropped, allowing Kris Hobbs – who was hit by a pitch with one out – to score.
Brownwood then surged in front, 9-6, thanks to four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs in the inning, Gavin Brandstetter reached on another dropped ball by Andrews, allowing Taylor Bessent – who walked to begin the inning – to score the tying run. Hobbs was then plunked again while Trynten Slaughter followed with a two-RBI double that plated Brandstetter and Hobbs for an 8-6 Lions lead. Byron Foster then produced an RBI single that plated Slaughter with the ninth run.
Atticus Porter notched the win in relief on the mound, allowing two runs – one earned – on one hit with five strikeouts and three walks over three innings. David Turner started and yielded five runs – one earned – on three hits with a pair of strikeouts and a walk in three innings. Defensively, the Lions committed five errors.
The Lions trailed 3-0 after half an inning, but grabbed a 4-3 edge in the bottom of the first. Reece Bolton reached on an error – one of six committed by Andrews – to start the inning, then Brandstetter walked ahead of an RBI single by Hobbs. Slaughter followed with an RBI double, then Foster reached on an error that allowed the tying run to score. Huntsinger also reached on an Andrews miscue that permitted Slaughter to come home with the fourth run.
Brownwood finished with seven hits – three by Slaughter, who also drove in three; and one each by Hunter Day, Brandstetter, Hobbs, and Foster, who plated two.
The Lions will conclude tournament action at 5:30 p.m. Saturday as they welcome San Angelo Lake View.
