BROCK – The Brownwood Lions dropped their 2021 baseball season opener Monday night, falling at Class 3A No. 3 Brock by an 8-2 count.
The Lions (0-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning but surrendered three runs each in the bottom of the third and fourth innings. After Brownwood trimmed the deficit to 6-2 in the top of the fifth, Brock (1-0) tacked on single runs in its final two trips to the plate.
Brownwood tallied just two hits – by Trynten Slaughter and Xadrian Mares – while Slaughter and Gavin Brandstetter drove in runs. Slaughter, Kris Hobbs and Reece Bolton drew two walks apiece as the Lions drew nine base on balls.
On the mound, Hunter Day, Atticus Porter, Byron Foster and Brandstetter combined to yield four earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.
Defensively, the Lions committed multiple errors.
Brownwood is back in action Thursday as it hosts Wall at 3 p.m. and Jim Ned at 5:30 p.m., the first two of four home games in a three-day stretch.
