Mary Kathryn Wood, 85, passed away on January 30, 2021, at her cherished home near Zephyr, Texas.

She was born on November 1, 1935, on Petit Jean Mountain near Morrilton, Arkansas, to Opal Olan Weems and Katie Mae (Kuhn) Weems. Mary graduated from Carlsbad High School in Carlsbad, New Mexico, in 1953. There, she met her future husband, J.E. “Red” Wood. Red and Mary were married in October of 1953 and raised three children, Kenny, Janna, and Judy. In 1966, Red and Mary moved their family from Fort Stockton, Texas to Gunnison, Colorado. Working together, they owned and managed Lost Canyon Resort and a Guide and Outfitter business. They later continued working together in Wildlife Management in South Texas before retiring near Zephyr.

Mary was blessed with the gift of making most any situation fun. Her laughter was contagious, and she had a way of making everyone around her feel comfortable and at ease. Mary absolutely adored her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time outdoors, tending her cactus beds, flower beds, and numerous bird feeders. She loved the Creator and admired His beautiful creations; she was a member of the Comanche Church of Christ.

Mary is survived by a son, Kenny (Martha) Wood of Junction, Texas; two daughters, Janna (Rick) Austin of Cross Plains, Texas, and Judy Lease of Hilliard, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Douglas (Melissa) Austin, Bradley (Kim) Austin, Aaron (Erin) Austin, Collin (Whitney) Wood, Joe Wood, Matthew Lease, and Katie Lease; six great-grandchildren, Kailee, Eli, Clara, Hazel, Jordan, and Hudson; three nieces, Becky Weems Brock, Vickie Weems Welch, and Cathy Weems Flory. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.E. Wood; brother, Russell Weems; son-in-law, Kim Lease, and great-grandson, Noah Red Austin.

A graveside service will be held at White Point Cemetery, near Comanche, Texas, on Tuesday, February 2, at 1:00 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Foster’s Home for Children at 1779 North Graham Street; Stephenville, TX 76401.
