The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets tumbled to 0-9 on the season and 0-5 in American Southwest Conference action with an 87-51 home loss to the East Texas Baptist Tigers Saturday afternoon at the Brownwood Coliseum.
Howard Payne fell behind ETBU (9-5, 3-2) by a 43-19 count at halftime and wasn’t able to make up any ground over the final 20 minutes.
The Yellow Jackets shot 31 percent (17 of 55) from the floor, 18 percent (4 of 22) from three-point land, and 61 percent (14 of 23) at the free throw line. HPU was also outrebounded 50-30 and committed 24 turnovers while creating 19.
Tyrell Thompson tallied a team-high 14 points for the Jackets trailed by eight from Michael House, six from Jaylen Ballou, four each from James Helzer, Brad Erskin and Jerren Godfrey, three apiece from Harold Myart and Evan Adkins, two each from Mason Green and Jacob Helzer, and one point from Reese Ridder.
East Texas Baptist knocked down 53 percent (38 of 72) of its field goal attempts, 19 percent (4 of 21) of its treys, and 58 percent (7 of 12) of its free throws, while owning a 64-20 edge in points in the paint, a 15-2 advantage in second-chance points, and a 27-15 cushion in points off turnovers.
Four Tigers finished in double figures – Kevin Charles with 20, Jayden Williams with 11, and Chris Haynes and Logan Blow with 10 apiece.
The Yellow Jackets are back in conference action at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at UT-Dallas (3-1, 1-1), a 103-83 winner over Belhaven Saturday.
