The District 2-3A Division II runner-up Bangs Dragons earned 18 all-district football accolades, as the 2020 honors were revealed Monday.
Three Dragons collected superlative awards as seniors Ethan Sanchez and Ethan Cortez were voted Co-Offensive MVPs, while fellow senior Trey Ivey was named Lineman of the Year.
Sanchez rushed for 1,838 yards and 28 touchdowns – including a 440-yard, 7-touchdown effort against Brady that earned Mr. Texas Football honors for Week 11 – while also catching seven passes for 233 yards and three scores.
Cortez connected on 79 of 125 passes for 1,625 yards with 19 touchdowns and two interceptions and added 731 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground.
Ivey helped clear the path for an offense that generated 41 points and 448 yards per outing.
First-team offensive selections included senior receiver Brayton Wedeman and junior lineman Warren Theriaque. Wedeman led the Dragons with 26 catches for 608 yards and eight touchdowns, while Theriaque helped Bangs produce 285 rushing yards and 163 passing yards per contest.
Landing on the first-team defense were Wedeman in the secondary, senior inside linebacker Wyatt Lykins, senior outside linebacker Damien Santillanes, junior end Logan Bishop, and senior tackle Charlie Smith.
Wedeman recorded 60 tackles with three interceptions; Lykins collected 42 tackles with two for loss, four fumble recoveries and one interception; Santillanes registered 80.5 tackles, including five for loss, with two sacks, one fumble recovery and one interception; Bishop finished with 31 tackles with one for loss; and Smith notched 60.5 tackles with five behind the line of scrimmage.
Second-team offensive choices included sophomore receiver Guy Powell, senior center Samuel Packer, Wedeman at punter and Smith along the offensive line.
Powell caught 15 passes covering 295 yards with four touchdowns.
Second-team defensive picks included senior secondary member Evan Belez and junior kicker Braxton Melling.
Belez chalked up 32.5 tackles, including one for loss, with two interceptions, while Melling booted 44 extra points.
Receiving honorable mention were senior receiver Trevor Bowers and senior defensive back Logan Massey.
Bowers caught 11 passes for 260 yards with three touchdowns while Massey finished with 15 tackles and one fumble recovery.
Also earning superlative honors in District 2-3A Division II were MVP Adam Winn of Ballinger, Defensive MVP Nakia Villarreal of Ballinger, Utility Player of the Year Preston Gonzalez of Sonora, Co-Newcomers of the Year Kale Sherrill of Sonora and Carter Arrott of Ballinger; and the Ballinger staff as Coaches of the Year.
Comprising the rest of the first-team offense were quarterback Tim Leatherman of Ingram Moore; running backs J.D. Ibarra of Brady and Garrett Dixon of Ballinger; tight end/H-back Tyler Vaughn of Ballinger; receivers Kam Carrington of Ingram, Weston Rollwitz of Ballinger, and Parker Linnard of Brady; center Colton Belk of Ballinger; linemen Seth Edwards of Sonora, Eric Toliver of Ballinger, D.J. Powell of Brady; and punter Mario Dalafuente of Sonora.
Rounding out the first-team were secondary members Landon Crow of Grape Creek, Reese Baird of Sonora, Tyler Vaughn of Ballinger, and Gavin Martinez of Ballinger; inside linebackers Adrian Medrano of Brady, Andrew Burroughs of Ingram, Nate Gensler of Sonora, and Aiden Busenlehner of Ballinger; outside linebackers Aidan Villanueva of Sonora, Garrett Dixon of Ballinger, and Isaiah Tarr of Brady; ends Seth Edwards of Sonora, Daniel Hernandez of Brady; Bryce Foster of Ballinger, and D.J. Powell of Brady; and kicker Sergio Saucedo of Brady.
The remainder of the second-team included quarterbacks Hayden Baronet of Brady and Landon Crow of Grape Creek; running backs Raymond Saavedra of Grape Creek, Andrew Burroughs of Ingram and Hunter O’Banon of Sonora; tight end/H-back Collin Humphrey of Grape Creek; receivers Gavin Martinez of Ballinger, Joemarcus Guerrero of Ballinger, and Jacob Wernecke of Brady; center Charlie Galliton of Sonora; linemen Aiden Busenlehner of Ballinger, Edgar Ibarra of Brady, Dante Huerta of Grape Creek, Jakob Pritt of Ingram, Marcos Villalobos of Sonora, and Ivan Fuentes of Sonora.
Completing the second-team defense are secondary members Keegan Farris of Brady, Lucky Vargas or Grape Creek, Tim Leatherman of Ingram, Jaime Buitron of Sonora and Weston Rollwitz of Ballinger; inside linebackers Zane Gillaspia of Brady, Collin Humphrey of Grape Creek, and Edgar De Luna of Sonora; outside linebackers Jorge Rodriguez of Grape Creek, Marco Vasquez of Sonora, and Beau Perkins of Ballinger; ends Marcos Villalobos of Sonora, Cody Miller of Ingram, and Edgar Ibarra of Brady; tackles Markus Castleberry of Ballinger, Juan Leon of Brady, and Dante Huerta of Grape Creek.
The Dragons finished with a 9-2 record, including a 4-1 mark in district, under third-year head coach Kyle Maxfield and advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2013.
