As part of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s celebration of 100 years of UIL football, the 1965 Brownwood Lions have been nominated as one of the Top 100 teams in the history of UIL Texas high school football. Also, Brownwood wide receiver Lawrence Elkins has been nominated as one of the Top 100 players in the history of UIL Texas high school football.
TexasFootball.com said of the 1965 Lions, “Is this legendary coach Gordon Wood’s best team? We say yes — the Lions were Wood’s only undefeated state champions, pummeling opponents defensively by allowing just 43 points all year as they brought home another crown.”
TexasFootball.com said of the Wilkins, “Elkins starred for Gordon Wood’s program from 1958-60 before going on to become one of Baylor’s all-time greats. He became Baylor’s first two-time consensus All-American before signing with the Houston Oilers after graduation.”
A fan vote will determine the Top 10 teams and Top 10 players of all time. To cast a vote for the 1965 Lions, visit TexasFootball.com/UIL100-Teams/Form. To cast a vote for Elkins, visit TexasFootball.com/UIL100-Players/Form. Voting ends at noon Sunday, Oct. 25.
Each of the 100 nominated teams and players will be recognized by the UIL and Dave Campbell’s Texas Football in a special commemorative magazine and the Top 10 will be recognized with a special ceremony at the UIL State Football Championships in Arlington.
