NEWCASTLE – The Class A Division I No. 6 May Tigers collected their fourth win a row Friday night, blanking the Newcastle Bobcats by a 57-0 count.
May (5-1) jumped out to a 29-0 lead after one quarter and added 28 more points before halftime to enforce the 45-point mercy rule.
The Tigers churned out 296 yards of total offense – 241 rushing and 55 passing – while the defense created three turnovers and scored twice.
Aaron McGinn led May with 61 rushing yards and a touchdown followed by Rory Bustamante with 50 yards, Isidro Salinas with 39 yards, Damian Salinas with 38 yards and a touchdown, Kaden Halk with 36 yards, Korbin Bass with 16 yards, Lane McGinn with 8 yards and Hayden King with a 3-yard touchdown run.
Through the air, Blake Harrell completed 2 for 4 passes for 32 yards with two touchdowns – 28 yards to King and 4 yards to Jayce Blankenship – while Bustamante hurled a 23-yard scoring toss to Chris Flenniken.
Defensively, Bustamante and Isidro Salinas both returned interceptions for touchdowns while Damian Salinas also picked off a pass.
King led May with 8 tackles, a fumble caused and 5 tackles for loss, while other standouts included Isidro Salinas (5 tackles, 2 tackles for loss), Bustamante (4 tackles), Halk (2 tackles), Aaron McGinn (2 tackles), Damian Salinas (2 tackles), Brian Kunkel (2 tackles), Bass (2 tackles), Harrell (1 tackle), Blankenship (1 tackle), Lane McGinn (1 tackle), and Keith Cross (1 tackle).
Next week, the District 13-A Division I schedule starts as May shoots for a fifth straight league championship beginning with a trip to Gorman (3-3), which is coming off a 48-12 triumph over Perrin-Whitt Friday night.
Brookesmith 55, Bluff Dale 0
BROOKESMITH – The Brookesmith Mustangs moved back over the .500 mark of the season with a 55-0 homecoming victory over the Bluff Dale Bobcats Friday night.
The Mustangs (3-2) limited Bluff Dale (1-5) to negative-71 yards of total offense – minus-50 rushing and minus-21 passing – while also forcing a pair of turnovers, both of which were returned for touchdowns. Randall Williams scooped up a fumble and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown, while Johnathan Willoughby returned an interception 21 yards for six points.
Offensively, the Mustangs produced 128 yards, with 111 coming on the ground. Willoughby rushed for 76 yards and two scores, Avery Williford added 29 yards and two touchdowns and Demario Salazar scored on a 6-yard run. Through the air, Clayton Adame tossed a 17-yard touchdown to Williams.
Next week, Brookesmith is off as the first team with a bye in District 15-A Division II. The Mustangs kick off league action Oct. 16 as Panther Creek (1-5) – which fell to Santa Anna, 58-6, Friday night – visits.
Richland Springs 68, San Antonio FEAST 16
RICHLAND SPRINGS – The Class A Division II No. 2 Richland Springs Coyotes collected their fourth straight win to open the season Friday night, rolling over San Antonio FEAST for a 68-16 homecoming victory.
Richland Springs (4-0), seeking its 10th state championship in 2020, opened a 30-8 advantage after one quarter and outscored FEAST (1-3) by a 38-8 count in the second period to end the game at halftime.
Behind a balanced attack of 179 passing yards and 174 rushing yards, the Coyotes finished with 353 total yards. Defensively, Richland Springs yielded 203 yards – 210 through the air and negative-7 on the ground. FEAST also committed three turnovers.
Landon Burkhart passed for 161 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 84 yards and two more scores. Jadeyn Bryant rushed for 90 yards and four scores, caught two passes for 45 yards with two trips to the end zone, and also completed an 18-yard pass.
T.J. Grant led the Coyotes with 105 receiving yards on two catches, including a touchdown. Keston Lusty caught an 18-yard pass and Chase Gossett added an 11-yard reception.
Defensively for Richland Springs, Grant led the charge with 5.5 tackles with 1.5 for loss, Bryant added 3.5 tackles, Burkhart and Brandon Stewart both chipped in three tackles with an interception, and Gossett added two tackles.
Next week, the Coyotes begin their quest for an 18th straight district championship and 74th consecutive league victory as they visit Rochelle (2-4, 0-0), which fell to Gustine, 52-37, Friday night.
Cross Plains 33, Hico 12
HICO – The Cross Plains Buffaloes opened District 8-2A Division II action with a 33-12 road victory over the Hico Tigers Friday night.
Cross Plains (5-1, 1-0) tallied its third straight win and fifth in six outings, while Hico (1-5, 0-1) was handed a fifth consecutive defeat.
The Buffaloes raced out to a 27-0 lead after one quarter and coasted to the finish.
Cross Plains produced 455 yards of total offense – 300 rushing and 155 passing. Cody McWilliams rushed for 190 yards and four touchdowns, Cason Allen chipped in 92 yards on the ground and Jeremy Gresham completed 6 of 12 passes for 155 yards with a scoring toss. Ryan Hopkins caught two passes for 49 yards while Ryan Reed added two grabs for 45 yards with a trip to the end zone.
Gresham and Hopkins began the scoring with a 30-yard connection, while McWilliams added touchdown runs of 12, 3 and 55 yards. In the fourth quarter, McWilliams tacked on an 8-yard touchdown carry.
Next week, Cross Plains continues district action at home against Santo (4-2, 1-0), which defeated Ranger, 60-0, Friday night.
Evant 52, Blanket 28
EVANT – The Blanket Tigers’ four-game win streak came to an end Friday as the undefeated Evant Elks notched their third win in a row, 52-28, to open the season.
Blanket (4-2) led 14-6 late in the first period but Evant (3-0) tallied 32 points in a row to open a 38-14 advantage.
The Tigers finished with 336 yards of total offense – 246 rushing and 90 passing – while allowing 367 yards – 228 through the air and 139 on the ground. Both teams turned the ball over twice.
Hector Castaneda rushed for 132 yards and two touchdowns for Blanket, Brayden Day added 66 yards and a touchdown and Tyler Simpson contributed a 34-yard touchdown run.
Carlos Morales passed for 71 yards, while Castaneda added 19 through the air. Simpson led all Blanket receivers with three catches for 51 yards and Hayden Rodgers chipped in two receptions for 29 yards.
Rodgers led Blanket with 13 tackles followed by Day and Simpson with eight apiece.
Next week, Blanket begins its quest for a third straight district championship as the Tigers open District 15-A Division II action at Rising Star (2-3), which hosts Waco Eagle Christian Academy Saturday night.
Cherokee 65, Zephyr 8
ZEPHYR – The Cherokee Indians spoiled the Zephyr Bulldogs’ homecoming, cruising to a 65-8 victory Friday night.
Zephyr slipped to 1-5 with the loss, while Cherokee improved to 4-2 overall.

Next week, Zephyr has a bye before preparing to open District 15-A Division I action on Oct. 16 against Lometa (4-0), whose scheduled game with Iredell Friday night was canceled.
